One of Spider-Man's more
odd appearances was in a Game Boy title based on the Punisher, a
Marvel character known for his penchant for violence and guns. Unlike
Spidey, who usually tricked or outwitted his opponents, the Punisher
would simply blow away anyone who became a problem. The pairing
of the two of them in this title was unlikely, and Spidey's role
was negligible. The gameplay was simple and much more enjoyable
than the other Spider-Man Game Boy roles. The screen scrolled from
left to right as you controlled the Punisher's gun sights in the
style of Operation Wolf: shoot the weapon-toting bad guys and protect
the innocent mothers pushing their babies around in carts. The environment
could be destroyed to reveal power-ups and health packs or more
bad guys. Spider-Man would appear between the action to offer advice
on how to beat upcoming levels, or he would swing in to rescue hostages
once their captors had been shot. It was a small, thankless role,
but Spidey was up to it nevertheless.
