Of all the titles to
be released, Spider-Man/X-Men in Arcades Revenge had the most potential.
It was released on four different systems, but the SNES version
had the smoothest animation and best sound. Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine,
and Gambit have all been kidnapped by the sinister Arcade, and it's
up to Spidey to rescue them. After they've been saved, they become
selectable characters, each with unique special abilities (adamantium
claws, optic blasts, etc.). The gameplay was simple: Run around
in a two-dimensional maze collecting flashing icons in a specific
order while avoiding robots, laser fire, and other pitfalls. This
would have worked great except for one excruciating flaw on the
part of Spider-Man: He couldn't shoot his webbing while in midair.
The ability to swing around
effortlessly from place to place is Spidey's most valuable asset
and what makes him stand out as a superhero. Without it, he simply
becomes another scrawny mountain climber. [Screenshots are from
the Game Gear version.]
