While Gen may be getting on in years, he hasn't lost any of his fighting spirit, and remains a deadly opponent to this day. He is also one of the few fighters alive who has knowledge (though limited) of the secret Shotokan killing techniques. Both Gen and his son, Lee, were originally contestants in the Street Fighter tournaments, but since his son left the tournament, Gen has carried on, always wary of the looming threat of Gouki.

In Street Fighter, Gen had only mastered the Praying Mantis stance, but he now possesses both the Mantis style and Monkey style kung fu. Thus, Gen is one of the few fighters who has mastered multiple martial arts, and in fact (using buttons to change his position) has two distinctive styles, each with its own special moves, to choose from. He is extremely fast, nearly as nimble as Fei Long, and is a master of chain combos. Any young fighter who underestimates Gen will be shortly eating turf for breakfast. Gen can usually be found frequenting the alleyways of China, as he searches for Gouki.
