Games to Movies - Animated
Animation, be it digital or traditional, is the way to go when making a movie based on a game that is fraught with special effects. If you can draw it, you can film it. Unfortunately, though, many of the animated movie versions paled in comparison to the games that spawned them: There is more action in a single round of Tekken 3 than there is in the entire film version. Nevertheless, these interpretations expanded storytelling and gave many gaming characters a life of their own.

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie
Producer: Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan
Release Date: 1995
Starring: Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, M. Bison, Vega
Capcom had much more of a direct influence on the animated version of Street Fighter II than it did on the live-action one (even though Capcom produced it). Unlike the Van Damme debacle, The Animated Movie featured Ryu as the main character. The plot was similar, however: M. Bison still wanted to take over the world and was gathering the most powerful street fighters he could find. After scouring the globe, he realized Ryu was the strongest and promptly began a plan to convert him to evil. Bison had Ken kidnapped and brainwashed and manipulated him to pull at Ryu's strings. There isn't much of a story to the film, otherwise. Generally, it follows Ryu wandering the globe competing and training, and occasionally it reverts to Chun Li's quest for revenge for her father's murder at Bison's hand. This film is far truer to the Street Fighter mythology revealed in the actual games and is much more enjoyable than the Van Damme movie. Rated and unrated versions are both available for rental - the unrated version contains more blood and Chun Li's infamous shower scene in true anime style. The film is a must-see for any Street Fighter fan, whatever version you get.
Memorable Line:
"Yip yip yip yip yip yip yip!" - Chun Li, lightning-kicking the !@#$ out of Vega against her apartment wall.
