Shigeru Miyamoto

There is shockingly little written about Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, considering he is regarded as video gaming's preeminent genius. Almost everyone knows something about Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese, but how many know about the man behind Nintendo's most famous games?

As the story goes, Miyamoto was hired by Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi in about 1977 as a favor to Miyamoto's father. Shigeru Miyamoto was an artist, not a programmer, but his creative skills would become integral to the company's future success. In late 1980, Yamauchi improvised a solution to the problem of a failing arcade game named Radar Scope. Faced with a large amount of unsold Nintendo cabinets, Yamauchi asked Miyamoto to come up with a game that could replace the Radar Scope boards. After transforming the failed game into Donkey Kong, Miyamoto went on to develop and oversee an amazing number of spectacular games, including the Super Mario series, The Legend of Zelda series, F-Zero, and Pilotwings. In an atmosphere of video games largely dominated by more aggressive styles of gameplay, Miyamoto still remains committed to creating entertainment suitable for players of all ages.

In 1997, Miyamoto was the first person to be inducted into the Interactive Academy of Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame.
