The planet is assaulted by meteorites from above and decay from below. An adventurer, a princess, a female pirate, and an aged amnesiac investigate the shattering of the elemental crystals. After several false starts, they discover that the meteorites are coming from another world. They jump into a warp zone and travel to the source of the menace. In the second world, they find the evil X-Death and his henchman Gilgamesh. Your party meets with the benevolent Four Braves of the Dawn. Thirty years ago they imprisoned X-Death inside a tree, but the spell has since become ineffective.
X-Death is confronted, and Galuf sacrifices himself for the party. Galuf's granddaughter Kururu joins in his stead. Together the new party confronts X-Death and kills him... or do they? (Answer: No.) The first and second world combine into a third; continents fuse and cities collide as the two realities combine. In the third world, X-Death excisesentire cities with the power of "mu" (nothingness), while the party struggles to unlock the eight holy weapons. At last the party travels to the center of the Cleft of Dimension, determined to finish X-Death once and for all.

The princess Reina has always lived in the shadow of her father, King Tycoon. Her rebellious tendencies lead her to wonder what life is like outside of the castle. Reina's foil is her sister, Faris. Uncouth and uncultured, Faris has spent her entire life on the high seas as a pirate. Galuf, an amnesiac old man, is jolly even in the face of adversity. His granddaughter Krile is fantastically optimistic and endearing.

The King of Bal - known to the party as Galuf - fights on the front lines. He may be old and forgetful, but he's still going to do his part! There's also a forest full of moogles ready to "kupo!" our heroes to victory.
