GameSpot's Guide to Ultima Online

Magic continued...

Some of the more useful spells are listed below:

Reactive Armor - A low-level spell that protects you from the physical blows of an enemy for a short time

Heal and Greater Heal - A low-level spell and its high-level successor that restore hit points after you've been wounded

Night Sight - A low-level spell that lets you see in the dark (essential in dungeons)

Fireball - A medium-level spell and the favorite weapon of most PKs, but also a useful piece in any dungeon crawler's arsenal

Recall - A medium-level spell that when cast on a recall rune, will transport you to a specific spot in Britannia

Mark - A high-level spell used to create recall runes

When you do decide to take up magery, make sure you practice! The only way you'll get better is by trying to cast spells. You'll fail a lot at first and waste a small fortune in reagents in the process. Eventually, however, you'll build up a solid magery skill and be able to rely on magic to get you through some tough spots. Just be sure you never cast an offensive spell while in a town. If you do, the guards will materialize out of thin air and cut you into many, many tiny pieces.

Player-Killers and What You Can Do About Them

OK, many of the characters in UO are evil - that's just the way it is. Origin had this sort of thing in mind when it created UO, and a great number of players have taken it upon themselves to make sure an evil presence is alive and well in Britannia.

The good news is that while you are still a relatively new character with no notoriety and few valuable possessions, you are probably 100 percent safe from PKs. Most PKs attack players with sterling reputations and vast wealth to get that wealth and add to their own not-so-sterling reputations. So if you're running around with your practice weapons and no armor, you probably don't have a lot to be worried about. Besides, even if you do get killed, you won't really lose much.
