Testing the Demon Hunter in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Gamescom 2012: We test to see if the son of Sparda can still make the angels weep and the devil cry in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

At first blush, Dante seemed to be a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none sort of guy. As one of the latest additions to the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale roster--alongside Ratchet and Clank, Spike (Ape Escape), and Sackboy--Dante has a fairly even selection of ranged and melee attacks. But after spending some quality time with the demon hunter, we discovered that his tastes were a bit more refined (and we're not just talking about pizza preferences).

During our sessions, we found that Dante relied heavily on close-quarters melee attacks to rack up energy and get kills. Individually, his ranged attacks served mainly as a harassment tool rather than a separate play style. On the plus side, he's still a highly mobile character, complete with a horizontal dash and attacks that propel him up and down. Overall, Dante was a very difficult character to play well since he wasn't equipped to wade into a crowd of opponents (unlike the unstoppable Spike). Instead, one-on-one fighting was his forte, where he could let his style shine.

SQUARE: Melee Attacks

Dante's signature sword--Rebellion--as well as his new demonic axe and angelic scythe, were controlled with the square button. Devil May Cry (and Marvel vs. Capcom 3) fans will instantly recognize the rising High Time and falling Helm Breaker attacks, staples from the demon hunter's repertoire. Tapping square by itself unleashed a quick succession of hits with the sword, which could be easily followed up with down plus square: an overhead axe smash that caused slight splash damage at the point of impact.

TRIANGLE: Ranged Attacks

Ebony and Ivory, the only ranged weapons to travel with Dante across the entire series, were relegated to the triangle button. Tapping triangle by itself produced a quick barrage of bullets, and he would automatically target the nearest opponent. However, once the barrage ended, Dante--in customary fashion--would take a moment to add some extra flourish when holstering the pistols: a nearly full second process that left him completely vulnerable.

To compensate, this move (and others) could be canceled into others to build, and extend, combos. While it's featured heavily in the trailer above, we had limited success executing this technique on our own. Even so, the guns' low meter gain and limited range stifled their usefulness outside of combos. The most mileage we got from the guns was the Rain Storm. Performed with down plus triangle in midair, this familiar attack unleashes a hail of bullets from above, and could hit multiple targets.

CIRCLE: Utility Attacks

Remember how annoying Ike and Marth's counters were in Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Well, prepare yourself, because Dante is keeping the frustration alive with an extremely similar counter of his own. It will even counter projectiles, but only the first shot of a multi-shot projectile (say, the first bullet from a machine gun) will be nullified. The son of Sparda also has a horizontal air dash that can be performed on the ground or in the air with forward and circle--extremely handy for escaping group rumbles.

SUPERS: The Killing Blow

The ever-useful Stinger attack is alive and well here as well, serving as Dante's level-two super. True to form, it fires him across the field in a horizontal line--killing any and all who get in the way. You just have to watch out for walls; you can't kill walls. Dante's level-one super, a close-range sword combo, was less useful since alert opponents could knock him out of the move before it actually went off. Meanwhile, Dante's level-three super--the Devil Trigger--transformed him into a one-hit killing machine for roughly 10 seconds.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on November 20, and those who purchase the game on the PS3 will receive a free download voucher for the Vita version as well.

A one hit killing machine for 10 seconds?  I hope that's exaggeration. The one thing I loved about SSBB is that the supers made you very powerful, but weren't always a guaranteed kill. You could potentially survive them.

Sonic the hedgehog. Solid Snake. The two most overpowered specials of all time. Survivalable? Game and Watch was a hard to avoid. Rob. Wario. C'mon. Play the game. @RetryAgain

If you want the original Dante, go play Marvel vs Capcom. I don't see what the big deal is...

@thatSTERLINkid only problem i have with it is it was the original dante that made the character an all-star and therefore, at least in my opinion, should be the version that is depicted in an all-star game

who the hell is Dante? and what game is that dog with the orange hat from? I've been a Playstation owner for about  10 years now and I recognize only about half of these characters. :(

@PDXmauler97, meh....don't bother counting that bastardized version 'Dante'. It'd be no wonder if you didn't recognize him. Let's just say that if you've played a game called DMC3 or DMC4 he's 'suppose' to *honor* that series' favorite protagonist. This however ain't nothing but a wack 'rebooted' fake.

@dr_jashugan Sackboy looks better than this new Emo May Cry-Dante (and I bet Sackboy is better in the sack as well :P).

It would be cool if they released a update for LBP 1+2 where it allowed you to make levels for All stars within a designated size with a certain selection of tools of course. Then you could export them into All stars for play.

Actually, Ike's counter in SSBB was not overly useful as it was so slow, and even Marth's was quite punishable.  I wonder if Dante's is more viable?

Not the first one and not the last one;  there was a JUMP! All Stars, a Ninja Turtles and even a Cartoon Network game that took the same concept and nobody cared but because this one is a Sony product then every Nintendo fanboy gets self righteous and offended.  Guess what? The entire video game industry is based on people making games that are inspired and take ideas from previous games.  Without this free flow of ideas the video game industry would not exist as it is and would be mired by countless intertwining lawsuits between developers bickering who invented this mechanic and who made which concept first.

I'm sick of the people that think they have made a Sherlock Holmes level deduction every time they say: "Tish ees a Smeesh Brewsh ceepy, HURR DUURR!!"

i thought this game was about ps icons. Why not go with the iconic dante? i know it sounds petty but i already wasn't too interested in this game this just gives me another reason to overlook it

PumpkinBoogie
PumpkinBoogie

@Chaos_Dante_456, No it's not petty at all. Personally I feel the same way. At least if it was the original Dante, it would've piqued my interest more; yet they had to go put in such a non-iconic version in and mess up the nostalgic vibe. I wouldn't be surprised if many Dante fans did the same or if they did decide to play the game, just ignore using him.

Looks like he'll be one of my mains along with Cole and Spike. Hey Max, could you do a similar article on one of these characters please.

Oh and, I never played a DmC game and the 2013 is gonna be my first so I don't care which Dante is in this game but I think it would be pretty cool to have the original one as an alt costume because he looks badass.

@supermoc10 If I had the time to hang out and play more PlayStation All-Stars here at the show, I would. I will say I got to play one round with Spike and he was a beast; a lot of his moves not only propel him forward but have super armor as well, letting him roll right through people. I easily won the round with him.

@supermoc10 Do yourself a favor and check out one of the older Devil May Cry games.  They'll be cheaper and probably better than DmC.

@supermoc10 I'm struggling to pick my mains because I like so many of the characters. I need to wait and see what their like to play with before I can decide but I'm between Kratos, Cole, Drake, Jak, Rachet and Sackboy so far.

I am surprised they picked this design for Dnate. but i think they did a great job in incorporating his moves :O I think he is gonna own everybody in this game (movelist wise) lol

just like he does in MvC 3, or so I heard.

@The_Great_Purge, because Capcom is too high off crack to remember such important details like that, apparently.....

@ronzi_p They'll probably have a skin for the original Dante.

Maxwell

@fend_oblivion So, there was a presentation for this game during Gamescom, and during the Q&A the FIRST QUESTION asked was about the possibility of a classic Dante skin.

The developers didn't give a definite "yes" or "no" but did say they are watching feedback and if a classic Dante skin is something the fans are clamoring for they will certainly consider adding one.

Really, guys, it doesn't matter. Just try playing as him. A design doesn't make a difference on how he plays.

Chaos_Dante_456
Chaos_Dante_456 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@SonWind744 but a design does affeect the experience. if it didn't u could just have faceless monochrome fighters doing the same thing. Heck it could be the best fighter in the world but bad character design can skew the experience. Part of the reason....scratch that the main reason people are excited about this game is playing as iconic playstation characters. you could have kept this game+same formula without the icons and the interest would be cut in half heck so would the experience.

this game really NEEEEEDS classic Playstation characters like Solid Snake, Lara Croft, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tomba, etc.

NOT characters like fat princess and emo Dante.

I'm not sure what would be worse, not including the characters I mentioned or adding them later as paid DLC..

Chaos_Dante_456
Chaos_Dante_456 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@PetJel I didn't even think about it but yeah while Snake may not be owned by playstation he certainly has more exclusivity that a Big Daddy from Bioshock lol. Oh yeah 4got about Spyro too. Not sure Why Crash hasn't been announced I still remember when he was suppose to be Sony's answer to Mario and Sonic.

Good list to have Toomba too lmao

Smash Bros did not originate the concept, it was simultaneously developed in the game Power Stone which came out within a month of Smash Bros, leaving it to debate who actually came up with the idea first. That being said Smash Bros is basically just a more opened fighting game, its not like its revolutionary to the point where people can be offended when its "copied".

Zepthire95

@kiramasaki It still makes me sad that Capcom have never included (as far as I know) any Power Stone characters in their cross over fighting games.
