The Land of the Dead
Grim Fandango

Receiving four percent of the votes, Grim Fandango's Land of the Dead dazzled you with its artwork and sound, which, coupled with a macabre theme and Mexican folklore, created a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

"The Land of the Dead lives and breathes, drawing you in more and more as the game goes on. By the time you reach the end, you don't want to leave this magnificent world. The greatest pity is that the game was less than successful from a commercial standpoint. A sequel would have been wonderful." -Joe Janca

"I'm glad you included The Land of the Dead as one of the best gameworlds. I have loved Grim Fandango and its gameworld ever since the first couple of hours I played the game. The sounds, music, artwork, and characters in all the places of the game made you feel as though you were really there, whether you were getting pigeons for Salvador atop a tall office building in El Marrow, or getting laughed at by Domino with a little tiny pick in your hand, at the edge of the world. When I finished the game, I was depressed because I had to leave the Land of the Dead and go back to my dull life." -Colin Davis

"Melodramatic skeletons in berets reading poems." -Cameron Tidwell

"Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. Atmosphere you can see, hear, touch - and which can seemingly see, hear, and touch you. The world of Grim Fandango is a sensual masterpiece; you become lost in it, as you would in the Pieta or Guernica. Once in Manny's world, there's no escape." -David Anderson

"As someone who appreciates art and architecture, the visual feast that is the Land of the Dead - portrayed in Grim Fandango - allows the player to become so immersed in the world that you may forget the plot just to catch a glimpse of the beautiful artwork." -Black Orpheus

"It's colorful, bright, original, and humorous, but best of all, it is populated by a wonderful cast of characters. Who could forget Glottis, Chowchilla Charlie and Police Chief Bogen (both of them caricatures of characters from Casablanca perhaps). Plus weird creatures such as Hector LeMan's talking crow and the talking messenger pigeons, not to mention Domino's 'octo-sub'... Grim Fandango is one of my favorite games ever, and the richness and immersiveness of the Land of the Dead goes a long way toward Grim's achieving that exalted status." -Peter Sahui
