Number Three:
Max
Sam and Max Adventures

Shame on us GameSpot editors. Most of the readers who voted for Max from the Sam and Max adventure games chastised and berated us for our sin of omission. Admittedly, it was quite an oversight, but we could only choose ten characters. In any case, readers reminded us just how important this hyperkinetic rabbity thing is.

"I can't believe you guys forgot the sidekick from the best duo ever to grace the computer monitor! The hyperkinetic rabbit thing known as Max offers his words of, er, wisdom throughout the game in a horribly twisted and sadistic way, and the wordplay that Sam and Max exchange in the game is a rare jewel in gaming. Not having Max on your list of best sidekicks is committing a foul and putrid blasphemy, my friends." -Ben Berntsen

"Max, from Sam and Max Hit the Road, was the coolest sidekick ever. He was a wisecracking little bunny that looked cute and cuddly, but was actually a psychotic, violence-loving maniac. He helped the game's hero, Sam, get through lots of the game's puzzles. In fact, when I was playing the game, my first instinct for every new puzzle was 'I'll let Max try to beat it.' Besides all these wonderful traits, Max also enhanced Sam's personality and gave Sam someone to crack on throughout the game. For instance, whenever the player tried the 'use' button on a character, Sam would chime in and say, 'I don't indiscriminately use people, except Max.' In every way, Max was one hell of a companion for Sam." -Mike L.

"How could you not pick Max?!?! He was the coolest sidekick ever. Violent, deranged, and harboring a warped sense of humor led him to be the perfect complement to the detective Sam. To top it all off, he's a cute and fuzzy bunny rabbit. A violent bunny rabbit." -Keith Hum

"No Max? How can this guy be left out? The fluffy rabbit with a big smile that can't seem to get his grubby fingers off anything around him? The comedic little guy that faces being used and abused by Sam yet never takes it seriously and even does his own extraordinary death-defying stunts in one of the most hilarious adventure games of all time? There's gotta be room to squeeze this insane guy in somewhere!" -Solomon Chow

"How could you forget Max the rabbit thing from Sam & Max Hit the Road?!? I mean, you had the freakin' guide-bot from Descent 2 and not Max! How is that possible? He's only the funniest sidekick in any computer game! And he didn't just crack hilarious jokes and make fun of Sam the canine-detective. No. He was also important to a lot of the game's puzzles. What other computer-game sidekick would reach down into a cat's gut to get an important note from the commissioner? Or drive so bad he leaves Sam clawing at the dash and shrieking like a cheerleader? Or help Sam short out an electrical system using only water and his fuzzy head? It's only Max. I can't believe he was left off the list! He's so cool he's had a cameo in just about every LucasArts game! He's a sidekick to be reckoned with. Literally." -Mark Battcock
