Number Six:
Morte
Planescape: Torment

One of two boneheads to appear in your top choices is Morte from Planescape: Torment. Morte isn't really a member of the living, but you don't need to be alive to be a sidekick. Actually, those who have passed on have the experience, knowledge, and powers with which to guide you in your quests, and yes, they sometimes get you into trouble as well.

"It was a really tough choice between Morte and Glottis, but in the end I have to go with Morte just because his background and his character are so much more fleshed out. And unlike many stories, his isn't just given out in an early exposition. You learn more about him as the game progresses, and not all of it makes you want to trust him more, but in the end you can't help it. Towards the end of Planescape, most of my gaming instincts told me that I should dump Morte in exchange for a more powerful companion, but I just couldn't do it. I actually cared about the little floating wisecracker, and for reasons I couldn't explain, it just wouldn't feel right not having him along at the end. I remember at one point I did drop him off temporarily, and when I removed him from the group, he just said, 'I will not cry.' I laughed so hard I almost cried myself. Ah, Morte, what a foul-mouthed, lying little softie. Sigil just wouldn't be the same without him." -Mike Sphar

"Not only is he a great help during the game (being a floating encyclopedia), but he's witty and also mingles into the storyline. You can't beat a floating skull who tries to hit on a fallen succubus." -Michael Stone

"Black Isle has created a number of memorable sidekicks in its games, but Morte manages to stick out from the rest. Black Isle made a number of strong fighters to back you up and NPCs that could make you laugh, but none could make you laugh as much as Morte. The comments he made to female characters (even without the physical means to, er, satisfy his desires), the exchanges between him and the Nameless One when you played with the Modron Cube, and other funny things he said made you laugh more than any other NPC could. And when you learn of just why he's been following you around, he makes you care more than any other NPC could. Even though the dialogue was presented just in text, learning about the mistreatment he endured under your past incarnations imprinted one of the most vivid images of the game into your mind and could leave you there with your mouth open in amazement." -Simon Yu

"He's so damn funny! Those curses of his had me falling over backwards with laughter. He's got good attacking, he's loyal, and he puts the hero down now and then. What else is a sidekick for?" -Josh Walker

"Morte sometimes lies to Nameless, he tricks him, and he even fakes his own death (funny thing to say) to save his skin. But he's one of the characters that offers comic relief in Torment, always cursing with some spicy comments, always toying with Anna's tail, never trusting the gith.... But he's funny, distracting, and even helpful sometimes, and he has a good story. So that's why he is the best of best!" -Etienne Blais
