Number One: Haunt
This one surprised us: Thief's Haunt took the number one place in your top ten by a landslide.
"The monster I'm particularly shocked you guys forgot or didn't find striking enough was the Haunt, first encountered in Return to the Cathedral when you, as Garrett, explore a haunted cathedral in search of a treasure item. The Haunts are ex-Hammers, the religious order of the land. They look just like people, except their faces are skulls, and they use swords. They strike the perfect combination of terror with their sounds and movements. The sounds emitted from the Haunts are the most striking, terrifying monster sounds I've ever heard in a game and give this monster incredible life. The Haunts are literally terrifying. Not even System Shock 2 had such a terrifying monster, and it had several very, very scary beasts. The Haunts also moved incredibly fast, faster than any other monster in the game. Truly frightening. Forget the fiend from Quake - fight this mother, and see how well you do!" - Mark Allman

"No monster could possibly be creepier than Thief's Haunt. You're casually strolling through the Haunted Cathedral, until you accidentally make a bit too much noise. All the Haunts become very alert and start snarling:"Jooooiiin uuus, Join us noooww!'" - Mike Farough
"These guys scared the pants off me every time they were around. Their sounds were perfect, the looks on their faces fit just right, and they were tough as hell. I had to quit Thief cause I thought my heart was going to thump out of my chest." - George Shannon
"There is simply no doubt: the Haunt from Thief: The Dark Project is the most terrifying enemy I have ever encountered." - Ben Watson
"The Haunt from Thief: The Dark Project is the stuff nightmares are made of. I mean, come on, a crimson-cloaked skeleton, isn't that the dictionary's definition of scary/cool?" - Jeff

"By far the most haunting (no pun intended) enemy ever to appear in a computer game. From their throaty, echoing voice, to their demented ramblings, like, 'Flames around you, flames, nothing but flames burning your flesh,' to the chain-rattling sounds they make when walking, to their appearance (overbearing skeletons wearing red soldier uniforms); to their superior (superhuman) strength, agility, and sword-fighting ability - every Thief player agrees that this enemy scares the living daylights out of them and is by far the most formidable." - Kyle Mallinson
"This monster was by far one of the freakiest creatures ever to be put in a game, from the demonic laughter, the evil phrases, to its skull visage and blood-red clothing. The first time I played Return to the Cathedral I had to stop and wait until morning, because those things just scared the crap out of me. If there is any monster that deserves to be in the top five of this list, it's the Haunt." - David Lejeune
