Winning five percent of your votes is the ever-sarcastic and sharp-tongued Elaine Marley. She holds her own against Guybrush, she can pack her punches, and she wields a sword like a pro.

"Just plain irony: She was the anti-damsel in distress. Always ending up in more trouble thanks to our hero Guybrush." -Robert Green

"Well, she is certainly one of the greatest characters ever. When I was watching the introduction to Curse of Monkey Island, I laughed so hard at one thing. She said she wouldn't marry LeChuck because she was washing her hair that night. Funny! But I was disappointed because she was just a gold statue for almost the rest of the game. I hope LucasArts will make Elaine a major character in Escape from Monkey Island." -Murat Ulutin

"She has become the object of obsession for the craziest lovesick zombie pirate to ever sail the seven seas, and yet manages to escape him whenever he gets too close. Need I say more?" -David Louk

"Elaine might be the only damsel in distress in a game who is actually more adept at rescuing herself than the game's hero (no offence to Mr. Threepwood, of course). But by being such a strong and willful character Miss (or maybe Mrs.) Marley is easily one of the best female characters in a game." -David

"Elaine rocks - no blushing bride is she. In Monkey Island I, she hatches a plot to defeat LeChuck that is almost perfect (if Guybrush hadn't interfered). In Monkey Island 2, she's a kickbutt governor, and who can forget the moment in Monkey Island 3 where Elaine tells LeChuck she can't go out with him because she's 'washing her hair' and then fires a cannonball at him? Elaine can be considered one of the first really strong female characters (besides Samus Aran)." -Matt Park

"In Monkey Island I, LeChuck captures Elaine and she escapes without Guybrush's help (even though he was trying his best). In Monkey Island 2, she tells Guybrush what's what instead of falling into his arms, doe-eyed, like so many other female characters. In Monkey Island 3, she did need saving, but that was Guybrush's fault, though she did escape from LeChuck on her own. Hopefully in Escape from Monkey Island we will see her on her own and standing." -Byron Hooper

"Elaine was one of the strongest people in the game and was one of the most entertaining. From the time she was turned into gold to the time she held the mask party and kicked Guybrush out of her house, she was always amusing. Plus, her huge lips in Curse of Monkey Island said it all." -Chris Taffy

"Have you ever met a woman who refused to go out with a zombie pirate because she's washing her hair? No, neither have I. But, it's nice to know there are women out there with low enough standards for us geeks, eh? Plus, she really knows how to handle that scabbard of hers." -Hilmar Van Der Bijl
