2. Final Fantasy VII

No surprise here: Final Fantasy VII's ambiguously happy ending was the favorite among a great number of you. It didn't clench the number one slot, but it came close.

"The ending of the game was perfect, starting with your descent to the bottom of the crater in an attempt to stop Sephiroth from destroying mankind. The final battle against Jenova led so well into the encounter with a twisted Sephiroth. Just when you thought it was over, you had to battle the fallen-angel version of the big S. His Supernova spell was incredible to watch. And once you defeated Sephiroth came the final ending, which was joyous, sad, and mysterious all at once. Never would you know the fate unless you watched past the ending credits to see Midgar as part of a lush jungle, overlooked by Red XIII and his children." - Steven Meigs

"In many ways, the impact of an ending is limited by the depth of the story. But when you have a game with a story as deep and engrossing as Final Fantasy VII, the ending takes on a lot more meaning. Of course, the final cutscene was beautifully rendered, but it was also a controversial and shocking climax to the game." - Mike C.

"Although many would claim that the ending to Final Fantasy VII appeared rushed and that it did not completely focus on the characters' futures, the ending ultimately brought together the very wish of the planet, which was to survive. The final battle between Cloud and Sephiroth was beautifully scripted and ended with a long movie clip showing the planet's battle with Meteor. Finally, once Meteor was defeated, Aeris looked up from her prayer and the game was finished, indicating that her wish for the survival of the planet was granted." - Sriram Sri

"The ending to Final Fantasy VII was incredible, starting with the Dr. Who-like trip Cloud takes to finally destroy Sephiroth using his ultimate limit break. Then there's the skin-of-your-teeth escape from the mountain via the transforming rocket ship, the impending doom by Meteor... and then a sudden music shift. Gently the life force of the planet comes to stop Meteor, and at the end you see Aeris in the middle of it all. Don't forget after the credits... you see Red 13 and his children running through a canyon to finally overlook the now-green city of Midgar, presumably hundreds of years later. A great ending indeed." - Jeremy L. Smith

"The ending of Final Fantasy VII is one of the most emotional, beautiful and most satisfying endings I've ever seen. As the healing life magic unleashes its power on the planet in an engrossing display of animation, it is all you can do to watch in silent awe as the planet comes alive. The expression on the key characters' faces and then... nothing. A truly mind-blowing experience that you either love or you hate. I loved it!" - Archeagus
