The Ten Best Readers Endings

7. Thief: The Dark Project

Thief was our eleventh choice for our own top ten, just narrowly squeezed out at the last minute by Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. That wasn't a problem with our readers, though, and the game's loyal fans once again voted it into the top ten.

"The ending in Thief: The Dark Project was so great because it was a natural extension of the game, continuing to drive the storyline. It answered questions I had not even thought to ask and brought the whole plot a little further into the light. It was as if the game wasn't ending, only this adventure. Like reading a series of good books, it left me satisfied and eagerly awaiting Garret's next adventure." - Shane M. Nyberg

"After defeating the woodsie lord in the final level I was rather shocked when somber music faded in and I was treated to the sight of someone huddling in their rags trying to protect himself from the snow. Only appropriate as the ending chillingly indicates that the actions you guided your thief through were in fact fulfilling a prophecy yet to be finished." - Absynthe

"Thief's ending was just subtly perfect because it didn't match anything in the earlier parts of the game. With the Trickster defeated, the entire world seemed to change... close-ups of our reluctant hero's new eye, the peacefulness of the snow, and the final conversation with a keeper made complete sense. It was indeed a fitting ending for a hero who never wanted to be a hero in the first place.... He just wanted his eye back" - Colin Loughran

"I really liked the way that the Keeper gave Garret the warning in such a mysterious and sequel-heralding way. 'All is as was written. Nothing has changed.... Beware the dawn of the Metal Age!'" - Joe F.

"In the culmination of the ancient prophecy, Garrett continues to be the quintessential rogue, discarding and disdaining even his own heroic deeds relating to the plot's ending. Further, it hints at the upcoming sequel without creating expectations and continues to develop Garrett as a fascinating, admirable, and mysterious individual." - Pathless1
