Monsters 6-10
Monsters 5-1
In movies, as in games, a good monster is hard to find. For every A-list monster, from the classic demon, as personified by Diablo's balrog, to Myth's gas-emitting, paralysis-inducing suicidal zombie, there are dozens of lame, or even goofy ones masquerading as the real thing; for example, the pig cop in Duke Nukem 3D. You would think that a bunch of editors in a room, reminiscing about monsters of games past, over refreshments, would be a good time. You'd be wrong.

Truly frightening characters are few and far between, as evidenced by our last painful meeting on the subject. You would think, considering the sheer number of games on the market, that scary characters would present themselves like an infestation of cockroaches, but again, you'd be wrong. They are elusive.

When we locked ourselves into the Ponderosa conference room (now known as the sensory deprivation tank) with pizzas, Mr. Pibb's, and a case full of Huggies wipes, in an attempt to channel the best monsters computer gaming had to offer, we had no idea it would take two solid weeks. Here's the sweat from our brow, the fruits of our labor, the few, the proud, the best monsters in gaming to date. They're presented in alphabetical order. And if you disagree, you can, as ever, talk back on the last page.
