Elaine Marley
Monkey Island games
In The Secret of Monkey Island, Elaine Marley was not only the governor of Melee Island but also the impetus for the whole series. Both would-be pirate protagonist Guybrush Threepwood and ghost-pirate villain LeChuck loved Elaine, and they both wanted to marry her. But LeChuck was a bit more desperate to do so, and so he kidnapped Elaine and took her to Monkey Island. What's great about Elaine is that she serves the typical role of damsel in distress but in many cases is much better at getting herself out of trouble than the so-called hero who comes to save her.

When Guybrush finally rescues Elaine, he finds that he didn't need to rescue her at all. She had escaped LeChuck's clutches long ago. And so began their relationship, which would continue to be rocky, at best.
In The Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, Guybrush and Elaine had gone their separate ways. She was now governor of Booty Island, and Guybrush had a new adventure planned: He wanted to find the Treasure of Big Whoop. Elaine made a brief appearance in LeChuck's Revenge, but she wasn't a major character like she was in the first game.

Finally, in The Curse of Monkey Island, it seemed they would finally be together. She revealed to LeChuck that she still loved Guybrush. And Guybrush escaped LeChuck's clutches to be with her. From LeChuck's treasure horde, he stole a beautiful diamond ring for Elaine, which turned out to be cursed and turned her to gold. And so, once again, Elaine became the object of desire for everyone in the game. Some wanted to marry her; others just wanted to melt her down and sell her.

And rumor has it that Guybrush and Elaine have tied the knot for the forthcoming Escape from Monkey Island. It's good to know our favorite ex-pirate governor will be back, and hopefully as more than a gold statue this time.
