You race as our hero, Anakin Skywalker.

Racer will be a 3D accelerator-only PC game and a Nintendo 64 game, as well. At first glance, it looks like Wipeout, but without the weapons. Like Wipeout, Racer lets you race hovercraft, but unlike Wipeout, the vehicles are a little less conventional and the tracks are Star Wars locales. All the game's hovercraft are composed of three parts: the cockpit (or pod), and two engines, which are connected to the cockpit via metal chords, and to each other by a tenuous beam of electric energy. Each part is modeled separately, and has a real physical presence that can affect the other parts.

This is Sebulba's pod. He's the champion of the podracing circuit, and an unabashed cheater.
|
There are dozens of different pods, and each one has a unique pilot. You are Anakin Skywalker, the lone human in the podracing circuit. Your ultimate rival is Sebulba, a podracing ace made all the more dangerous by his cheating ways. All the pods have varying dimensions and looks. Your pod is an average-sized vehicle, but there are others that dwarf your pod. Some are brightly colored or striped, and others have massive square engines or sleek oval ones. Of course, there will be obvious trade-offs in the different vehicles you choose. The large ones can take lots of damage but are slow. The small but nimble ones might not stand up to the rigors of racing quite as well as sturdier craft. You'll be able to choose your own pod or a handful of others when you start the game, and every time you beat a boss on his home planet, you'll be able to pilot his pod in subsequent races.

Each pod is unique. There are small, large, fast, slow, and all manner of variously shaped craft. |
Alternatively, you could keep using your own pod but upgrade it after each race by visiting Watto, a mechanic, who also appears in the movie. There will be seven subsystems to your pod, and up to six different parts for each subsystem. He sells a variety of parts, but they can get expensive. Fortunately, you can win lots of cash by winning your races. If you lose, though, there is always the junkyard, where you can salvage less-reliable parts. The various subsystems include acceleration, self-repair capability, top speed, turning, and cooling system.
