The plot is set after the events of the TV series' sixth season, and it revolves around the three Orbs of the Pah-wraiths, sentient beings who are the natural enemies of the Bajoran Prophets. When combined, the three orbs have the power to open a second wormhole, one that leads to the Pah-wraiths' temple. Its ability to open up this second wormhole makes the orbs very attractive to various opposing forces in the Alpha Quadrant, all of whom pose a potential threat to the Federation and the fragile cease-fire it has been able to scrape together. These forces include the Cardassian military, which would use the wormhole to strike at Bajoran dissidents at will. The Jem'Hadar, under the strict supervision of the Founders, would take advantage of such a wormhole to invade Federation space. Even Bajoran religious extremists would benefit from the power to control access to this wormhole. The Federation has taken the initiative to find the Orbs of the Pah-wraiths before they fall into enemy hands.

The Fallen is played from the perspective of three TV-show favorites: Captain Benjamin Sisko, Major Kira Nerys, and Lt. Commander Worf. During the opening sequence of the game, you'll choose one of the three characters to play as through the entire single-player campaign. After finishing the game with that character, you can then go back and play it again twice, each time with one of the remaining two Federation officers. Even though all three cross paths throughout the game, each character plays a little differently, giving you three different perspectives of the same scenario. Additionally, the three characters are given different physical attributes, and each of the game's levels is balanced to take advantage of the characters' respective skills accordingly. Worf, for instance, is a bit slower than Kira or Sisko, but he benefits from added power and endurance. When playing as Worf, you'll encounter more hand-to-hand and melee fights than you would playing as the other two. As you probably can guess, Kira is the agile one of the bunch, but she is also the most susceptible to damage, while Sisko is the balanced mix of the two.
In total, The Fallen has eight unique environments that range from the Deep Space Nine station itself to the surface of a thrashed Bajoran moon. Each environment is split into four or five smaller levels, or minienvironments. Multiply that by three (for each of the characters), and you'll begin to grasp the scope of The Fallen's depth.
