Might and Magic VI, Ultima: Ascension, and Wizardry 8 The '80s were the golden age of computer RPGs, and the Ultima, Might and Magic, and Wizardry series, with the help of EA's Bard's Tales and SSI's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons "gold box" games (like Pools of Radiance and Hillsfar), defined the genre during that era. Today, it's a sign of the genre's hard times that there hasn't been a core game released in any of these series in over four years. The good news is the drought is almost over. Might and Magic VI was recently released, and both Wizardry 8 and Ultima: Ascension are scheduled to ship later this year. However, RPG fans expecting the new games to be substantially similar to the old classics might be in for a surprise. After such a long time between games, one has to wonder whether the development teams can recapture the magic that made these games great and whether traditional role-playing gaming will be sacrificed in order to appeal to a broader audience. Only a closer look can answer these questions. | |||||||||||
