The Rise of Rome expansion pack
offers four new civilizations from the Roman theme. We'll explore the strengths
and weaknesses of these new civilizations, as well as updating your knowledge
of the original civilizations by telling you which old civilizations gain
which new units.
Attributes: Transports
30 percent faster, Fire galleys +25 percent attack, Academy units and
all elephant units +25 percent hit points.
Strengths: The Carthaginians can mount a good sea attack with their
more powerful fire galleys, but they lack catapult triremes. They also
can muster good offense with their more durable academy units and elephants.
It is best to go into combat with your academy units and elephants, but
keep cavalry and archers near to kill enemy priests, who will have an
easy time converting your academy and elephant units.
Weaknesses: They can't research metallurgy or chain mail, the two
Iron Age technologies for attack and armor upgrades. Nor can they create
cataphracts, legions, or heavy horse archers. Carthaginians, especially
the slow-moving academy units and elephants, are vulnerable to priests.
Without any chariots to run interference, Carthaginian players need to
be especially wary of powerful priest civilizations like the Egyptians
and Choson. These civilizations' priests can deter you from building your
heavy units. To thwart priest-heavy enemy forces, bring along archers
and cavalry for help.
Attributes: Academy
units +2 piercing armor, hand-to-hand units +2 line of sight, Siege workshop
units 50 percent cheaper, Units four times more resistant to conversion.
Strengths: Macedonians are great against powerful priest civilizations
like the Egyptians and Choson, because this civilization is heavily resistant
to conversion. This makes it more viable to use armored elephants, which
Macedonians have access to. Their academy units are tougher against archers
and they pay less for siege weapons. If you need to destroy an enemy wonder,
the armored elephants and cheaper siege weapons will make up for your
lack of higher-end siege weapons.
Weaknesses: In exchange for their greater conversion resistance,
Macedonians themselves cannot build temples and therefore cannot use priests.
Macedonians also don't have access to the most powerful siege weapons,
despite their siege-weapon bonus. They also don't get camel riders, long-swordsmen,
chariots, or elephant archers.
