General Tips
By now you should have a solid arsenal of strategies and tactics that can help you conquer the galaxy. Here's a brief list of some other tips you might find useful while playing Rebellion.
- Try playing on easy first - Even if you're a strategy gaming pro, you should try the easy setting to get used to the game and its interface. Besides, even on easy, a single game can last 15 to 20 hours.
- Have patience with the interface - No, it's not the best around, but it's really not that bad once you get used to it. Take advantage of the minimized window queue along the side of the screen. Close all windows before checking your status messages. Pay attention to the system name for the window you're working in so that you don't deploy something to the wrong sector.
Remember to place the gifted military leaders of your key fleets and garrisons. |
- Turn off the stinking droid voice - C-3PO will have you ready to claw your own eyes out if you let him babble away every time a message comes in. Turn off the "translate counterpart" setting from his menu. On the Imperial side, you might want to deactivate SD-7, the counterpart droid that makes some really awful noises when a status message comes in. IMP-22, on the other hand, has a very cool, appropriately oily kind of voice that helps get you psyched for galactic conquest.
- Make your command decisions on the Very Slow time setting - This will give you a little more time to think about important missions and deployments. You can always speed up the game again after you make a few key decisions.
- Don't forget the encyclopedia - Everything is well documented from within the game, so you should make use of the information at hand.
Rebellion's encyclopedia is a very handy guide. |
- Similarly, don't neglect to read the manual - It's actually well written and can help clear up any confusion you might have. Pay special attention to Chapter Three of the manual, which gives lots of good information on all of the game's intricacies.
- Unlearn (some of) what you have learned - We all know and love the Star Wars movies, and there are some events in the game that match events from the films (and books). But Rebellion is an unpredictable game. Don't make decisions based on things you've come to expect from the movies. Learn what your ships, troops, facilities, planets, and characters can do in the game, and try to forget about what you know from the films.
- Schedule some playing time and stick to it - If you really like this game, do yourself a favor and pace yourself. It can really be addictive. Rebellion has that Civ-like ability to steal entire days out of your once-productive life.
