GameSpot's Question of the Week
GameSpot's Question of the Week

by GameSpot Staff

Last week, we wrote about our most disappointing games of 1999. Many of you agreed with some of our choices, while others of you offered even more games that failed to meet your expectations this year. This week, we decided we would take a more positive look at the year in gaming, and so we reflected on this year and asked ourselves what was the most surprising game of the year.

We knew games like Age of Empires II and Unreal Tournament would be good. Of course, for many of these games, we had high expectations, and in most cases, those expectations were met. However, there were many games that were unheralded going into the year, and when they released, we were as surprised as anyone by how good these unsung games were. There were also games that we had very low expectations for, such as Torment, that were much better than we ever anticipated. So when we asked ourselves, "What was the most surprisingly good game of the year?" we chose games that some of us had never heard of and games that we thought would be bad.
