Up until the early to mid-1990s, the strategy genre was dominated by turn-based games. Games like Civilization, Master of Orion, and other turn-based games were at least as popular as real-time strategy games like Dune, Warcraft, and Age of Empires. But recently, it's become apparent that real-time strategy games have eclipsed turn-based games in both sales and number of titles released. While there have been several excellent turn-based strategy games in the past few years, none of them has sold anywhere near as well as real-time strategy games like Starcraft or Command & Conquer.
This week we asked our editors to share their views on the future of turn-based strategy games. Read on to hear their responses, and read your own responses to last week's question, What game is most artistic? And if you'd like to comment on the fate of turn-based strategy games, be sure to send an e-mail to ask-the-editors@gamespot.com, and your views might be included in next week's Readers' Response section.
