One facet of computer gaming that is often taken for granted is sound. While graphics and gameplay are difficult to ignore, well-developed music and sound effects can create atmosphere in a way that graphics alone simply cannot. Those of you who have played Homeworld, System Shock 2, and other games that make great use of sound already know this.
Graphics have made remarkable strides in the past couple of years, and most likely they will continue to do so. But how will sound change in the games of the future? This week we asked our editors that very question. Read our editors' hopes and predictions, vote for which one you think will come true, and for more information on sound in games go take a look at The Ten Best Game Soundtracks. Finally, you won't want to miss your own responses to last week's Question of the Week, which we've posted at the end of this feature.
Also, don't forget to send your response to this week's question to ask-the-editors@gamespot.com and your answer could appear in next week's feature!
