The Internet has changed the way we play games almost as much as it has changed the way we invest. While many multiplayer games such as Quake III and Unreal Tournament have Internet capability in their network play, a whole different species of multiplayer game has been developed in response to the incredible possibilities the Internet provides. Massively multiplayer games such as Ultima Online and EverQuest have changed the face of gaming by letting thousands of players interact online simultaneously in virtual worlds. But this minigenre is still in its formative years, and the next generation of massively multiplayer games are sure to improve on what is already one of the most popular types of PC gaming today.
