GameSpot's Guide to Quake II, By Shane Mooney

Unit Walk-Throughs

Since Quake II isn't quite as linear as the original Quake, we thought you might like a little help getting through the game. Unlike Quake, in Quake II the levels aren't like levels in the traditional sense. They're more like hubs, like those found in Hexen II. The hubs here are called "Units", and within each Unit are different areas you must visit to accomplish certain objectives before you can progress to the next Unit. We tell you how to get through them all, and even where to find some hidden items, including most, if not all, secret areas in the game. We've put those on a separate page for each Unit, in case you'd rather find them yourself. We don't want to spoil the fun of it.

Also, remember that if you want to jump ahead to any part of the game and this guide, just click on the Contents button at the top of the page. That's where you'll find a list of links to all of the sections of this guide.

Good luck, Marine!

Here are the eight Units in the game and what the objective is for each:

  • Unit One - Establish a communication link to the Command Base
  • Unit Two - Destroy the Strogg logistical train
  • Unit Three - Destroy the security grid protecting the Industrial Center
  • Unit Four - Navigate the mines and find an entrance to the Factory
  • Unit Five - Shut down the alien Processing Plant
  • Unit Six - Infiltrate and destroy the Strogg Main Reactor
  • Unit Seven - Close the Main Hangar Bay door and destroy the Black Hole Generator
  • Unit Eight - Neutralize the Strogg leader's Communication System and kill the leader
