Prince of Persia 3D is finally nearing completion. This is the third installment in a venerable franchise that is over ten years old. It's been quite a few years since the last Prince of Persia game, but those who played the first two games still remember them with fond memories. With Prince of Persia 3D, the developers are giving the prince a huge makeover to bring him up to speed and current with today's graphics and gameplay. Will it be enough to win over the current generation of gamers who might not even know what this franchise is? We shall see.
Mindscape recently gave us a beta build of Prince of Persia 3D. It contained several areas to explore, enemies to fight, as well as the weapons and puzzles that will be in the final game. Unlike the first two games, which were 2D side-scrolling platform games, this one is a fully 3D, third-person-perspective action-adventure. The setting is 12th century Persia, and the enemies and locations are drawn from Arabian lore. The gameplay is a mix of exploration, puzzle solving, and one-on-one combat.

When this game was first announced two years ago, it was in the wake of the giant Tomb Raider craze. Some might have cynically suggested that Red Orb (the Prince 3D developer that was bought by Mindscape and folded into the company) was cashing in on the third-person trend, but two years later, now that the hype has died down, it simply seems like a natural and logical progression for the series. This game is Prince of Persia, but updated with today's graphics, more exciting gameplay, and a more involving story with personality.
