When you fall into the Underground's secret hideout, a
conversation with the charming Heather will provide more
information about the storyline and confront you with two
"subversive tasks" which you should accept: broadcasting a
tape of Brian over Neutropolis TV and painting the
sculpture in the M.I.N.T. Mall yellow. The videotape will
appear in your inventory after the conversation ends.
Getting Into the TV Station
At the TV station, pursue all lines
of conversation with the bouncer,
and you will detect a certain phobic
obsession to his thinking. The task
now is to find a rat. A rubber rat is
available at the mall, from the
Thrifty Fifty on the second floor.
You might also browse this shop for
future reference. Using the rat puppet on the bouncer will
initiate a cute cut scene but not the desired effect.
Evidently, you need a real rat. If you followed the
walk-through of Kent's apartment earlier, then you already
have the rat from the washing machine. If you don't have the
rat, here is another way to get it. Get some frozen food
from the mall and break the washing machine glass door.
You will find, that the iced food melts before you get back
to the apartment. What you need is that towel from Kent's
fragrant bathroom. Pick up the towel and bring it to the
Cave of Comestibles in the mall. Pick up the frozen food
and then use the towel on it. This will keep it frozen until
you get back to the apartment. Pick up the little box from
the stove and use it on the rat.
When you have the rat in the box, use it on the bouncer,
which will give you entry to the TV station.
Playing the Videotape
In the TV station, go into Mr. Johnson's office on the right
and speak to his secretary. After a thoroughly gratuitous
conversation, she will let you speak with Johnson, who
should give you the ID card for access to the studio. Use
the card to enter the control room and insert the video tape
into the VT2 machine. When you use the nearby edit
computer, you find that a password is needed to run the
correct VT deck. As we all should know by now, the best
place to get a password in our brave new world is to ask a
geek, so go the other office (opposite Johnson's).
Conversing with the geek and even just hanging out for a
minute or so near him will offer some obscure clues about
the location of the password and how to get it. The
password is the geek's middle name and is available on his
name tag. You need to get the shirt off of his back in one of
two ways. One way is to return to your apartment and use
the ID card to scrape the bean splat from your kitchen wall,
return to the geek, and use the card on him. Or, you can pick
up the turd from outside the building and use that on him.
Both lead to the same cut scene in which you get the shirt.
Examine the shirt and then the ID badge to get the
password, HOLEN. Return to the control room and enter
the password. Type "Run VT2" to call up Brian Deluge's
video clip. This will return you to Heather's hideout, where
you will be instructed to complete the second task.
The Waffle Statue
Take a deep breath before setting
out on this task, as it is quite
involved. Go to the mall and try to
get close to the statue. This will
initiate the necessary conversation
with Norm 2782, in which he
suggests that a pack of wild dogs
barking is one way to get him away
from his post. Barking dogs, you
say? Well, find to the blind man in front of the mall and talk
with him to find out about his barking dog. You also will
want his matches. You will need several items from the
factory for this puzzle, so return there. If you didn't get the
books from the locker, go to Changing Room 1 and use the
one small locker that is marked "locker" instead of
"lockers." Take the two books, Firestarter (hint, hint) and
Elizabethan Costumes.
Getting Yellow Paint
Now you will need to get some yellow paint, but the barrels
of it outside of the factory will be too heavy to carry. You
need a container and a dispenser for the paint. Go to the
Grinder Room and examine the manual next to the fire
extinguisher. To empty the extinguisher you need the belt,
which you should have found earlier in the factory air ducts.
Use the belt on the extinguisher, use the extinguisher, and
then pick up extinguisher. Go outside of the factory and use
the fire extinguisher with the paint drum to get the yellow
paint. Return to the mall.
Shoplifting From the Thrifty Fifty
Back at the mall, give the Elizabethan Costume book to the
blind man, who will give you the matches. When you try to
go into the mall, Norm 2782 will confiscate the
extinguisher. Talk with him to discover clues about how to
use the extinguisher. Getting the Waffle Statue painted
yellow is going to involve a series of entwined accidents
and planned disasters. From your conversation with the
blind man, you may have figured out that you will want to
make his dog freak out at some point.
Playing the Stereo
Go to Disco LA-LA and talk to Brian Deluge to get several
clues about what needs to be done. You may have noticed
that the needed stereo speaker can be found in the Cave of
Comestibles down the hall. Go to the Thrifty Fifty store
upstairs and pick up the Fruit Croppers. You can't afford to
buy them, but it is worth trying, as you'll get a cut scene of
being tossed out of the mall. Use the croppers on the glider
sign to get the large glider. Pick up both a small glider and a
Yappie Puppy, and use the two items together several times
to thwart the security scanner. Likewise, use the croppers
with large glider and then pick up the choppers outside.
Return to the Cave of Combustibles where you may have
noticed that talking to the volatile Ray will cause the lights
to go off. When the store is dark, use the croppers on the
globe speaker. Finally, use the speaker on Brian's stereo in
the back room of Disco LA-LA. Pick up the CD marked
"CD Cover" and entitled "Total Clap" off of record store
wall and use it in the stereo. Return to the Waffle Statue
and use the matches on Firestarter (get it now?). Finding
yourself in a dark storage room, use the matches.
