Next-Gen Fact and Fiction

Eddie Makuch
By Eddie Makuch, News Editor

GameSpot rounds up everything we know--and everything we think we know--about the Wii U, the PlayStation 4, and the Next Xbox.

This feature was updated on Wednesday, March 28 with new additions

New consoles from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are coming. But the form they take, the capabilities they boast, and their prices all remain to be seen. Rumors about each console have been flaring up for years, but they seem to be reaching critical mass as of late.

We've heard lots of scuttlebutt about the next wave of consoles. These rumors include the seemingly wild (the Next Xbox blocking used games) to the certainly plausible (Wii U allowing two-tablet support).

Collected here is a highlighted catalog of rumors concerning the next-generation consoles from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

I'm not sure what console I'll go with next gen. I took a long break from the Xbox 360 when the COD online craze took over, and when Kinect started being pushed. Gamings going a direction I dont like, I miss the days of popping in a game and having fun...not this big online deal and add ons required. I feel a big part of the problem are the developers not making quality games like they once did.

The Xbox and Xbox 360 were great and I think Microsoft knows what they're doing but I really need to be impressed or feel the old way of gaming to go back to the Next box.

As far as Sony goes, I've never cared for the Playstations after the first one...the controller, games, and entire persona of the Playstation turns me away. Ever since the Dreamcast and PS2 rumble I've hated Sony.

The Wii U, so far I'm liking alot...but questioning alot. As of now I would get one...but the 1st and 3rd party titles need to wow me to jump on board

Now if Sega crawled out from under a rock and announced a system I would buy it no matter what.

As more rumors are being spawned from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the more I have a feeling that they're trying a little too hard to make their gaming platforms 'different'. (Wii-U's tablet-thingie, Xbox possibly focusing on the kinect, PS4 potentially focusing on move or not existing at all,). I think this generation will be the one that finally crosses the line from 'awesome gaming machines' to 'trying too hard''.

Got a feeling I'll be sticking to my good ol' PC for awhile.

FYI I Had a PS2 for years lot of fun on it  just bought a PS3 hardly use it except for playing DVDS, I'm officially a PC gamer. I have only upgraded the graphics card[$200] on  my computer in 7yrs and i can still play games on it.Not on Maxed out settings but still high or medium and the graphics are awesome.

RitsukoEX 32 pts

@LanceCypher LOL!! Wii-U WILL be on the same level as the Xbox360 & Crapstation 3!

RitsukoEX 32 pts

@Albaficas that was very FUNNY!!! you got MORE JOKES like that?!!

Devin-B 9 pts

@Aktiv16 Yeah... you're right.... Did you think that I thought Nintendo made the Dreamcast? What made you think that?

Aktiv16 5 pts

@Devin-B (LOL) Dreamcast 2? The first one was made by SEGA not Nintendo! lmfao

Aktiv16 5 pts

@GodOfSyn i was thinking the same thing by just letting us upgrade our consoles. So if you want the best settings go buy a good v-card. They probably make there on type of proprietary cards to make money though, but it still will be great to upgrade down the line. We all know devs will be complaining in the first few years in the development cycle. But once they get familiar with the process their games get better and we'll have to upgrade the v-card to get the better graphics.

I'm so excited for these consoles. It's going to be so amazing. I'd prefer 3-5 year console cycles personally, because like anything electronic, specifically computers, they are on similar life cycles, at least in an IT environment with our vendors, and at previous companies. I know its not the best business practice for a company like Sony or Miscrosoft who are out to make money, but we will get the best product, best graphics if they are able to continually upgrade the hardware, unless they design a PC type system where end users like ourselves can constantly upgrade the components when they are launched for the system, that way its not required for those that cannot afford to upgrade, but will unlock the highest settings in future games for the platform! That would truly be a 10-15 year life cycle!

Let Nintendo rename the next Wii to.. "Woo"! I'd tolerate "Wuu" too. Woo wouldn't? ;)

jpfeiffer000 5 pts

both the ps4 and next xbox workers are so dumb. i will never buy a gaming console that forces you to be online all the time. unreal!!

Aquasuron 5 pts

Someone tell me why I got the feeling this "Orbis" project is NOT meant to be the successor of the PS3 at all, but rather a completely individual gaming hardware project of sony? Is it just the statement that a PS4 is not imagined (instead there is such a codename like orbis), or the rumor of a lack of backwards compatibility...?

PS3BigFan 6 pts

If Sony and MS are going to lock their systems and make them only playable online (with internet connectivity) then I'll be no longer a Big Fan of the PlayStation and will go then with the Wii U.

Albaficas 52 pts

SONY and NINTENDO is the way to go next gen xbox fanboys deal with it already

RussellGorall 7 pts

Nintendo not wanting to pay for DVD or Bluray is the reason they aren't including it. Silly to say something that does Netflix won't do DVD, that goes against each other. I have four devices that play Netflix, the difference is Nintendo doesn't have to pay the fee for Netflix.

123joe123 6 pts

if theirs no more disk and there's no used games that work i will quit with Xbox

Matt1836 5 pts

I guess the Xbox 360 is my last system I wonder what this means for Gamestop used games

pbrugalett 5 pts

Lock out used games on PS4? Bad idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LanceCypher 15 pts

@spydax1 I doubt that Nintendo would attempt to market a system that sports 6-year-old technology. More likely, the Wii U will have notably higher capabilities than the PS3 and 360. I'm more concerned of the possible capabilities of the other Next-Gen machines, because they will, likely, have access to greater levels of tech due to later release dates. At least it's unlikely that they will use less than brilliant tech in their newest system. They ought to have learned that lesson from the non-HD Wii

spydayx1 5 pts

I believe that Nintendo has there work cut out for them when the wii u is finally released sure it will have the ability to play in 1080i but you know its like saying when nintendo's wii u can do what the xbox 360 can do and the Playstation 3, sony will be releasing there PS4 and Microsoft will release there xbox 3 this will put Nintendo new system behind again unless nintendo releases some kind of expansion unit to the wii u that will update the graphics but then nintendo has the tablet controller to also consider hmm well will the tablet controller push out the same graphic capability as the wii u or less and will there be some kind of upgrade to the tablet controllers along with the wii u system?

Microsoft needs to just adopt Sony's approach to online purchases; You want to buy DLC, a game, a movie? The store tells you how much it is (in real money, not points so that you can't keep track of how much you're ACTUALLY spending), and you pay that much. No money/points left over. If it's $5.99, it says $5.99, you pay $5.99. Simple. There's not much that I prefer my PS3 over my 360 for, but making online purchases is a no-brainer. Sony got it right.

Until Nintendo can prove that 3rd party support is on board with their "next gen" console, only then with I take interest. I'm tired of bying their stuff and only ending up with 1st perty games.

Devin-B 9 pts

I'll take a Dreamcast 2 please.

Dramacide 5 pts

Solid state drives would be good, it would stop the problem of discs being destroyed by your xbox being accidently nudged or tipped over which has ruined a few of my favourite games :(

yoyou225 5 pts

@Sk8rlink Be serous here. Yes, I called you an idiot and if you were offended by that, welcome to the internet. A better game engine helps, yes, but in all honesty, doesn't core gameplay matter anymore? Consider this for a second... does 10% more responsive AI completely makes you say, "WOW! That version of the game is better. I should buy that game even though the gameplay is diminished cause of the poor controls. But who cares, the AI is a little better. Best make the buy!" Seriously, what ever happened to mastering core gameplay or experimenting with new gameplay concepts at the core. I'll admit, shiny new engines can sway my wallet sometimes, but if the game is better on one system because of it's basic controls, I'm going with the fundamentals. I'm no fanboy, I own all consoles and a custom build PC, but I don't let big production values get in the way of fundamental fun in a game. I could care less about you selling your Wii. Good for you, if you didn't like it, fine. But, don't let shine cover substance. Thats just stupid. if the Wii U has a better control scheme for AC 3, I'll buy it for Wii U. That simple.

Lykanthropie 5 pts

i dont care about the new xbox or ps - all i want is the new nintendo system - xbox have no good exklusives, and ps not enough.

_Roo_ 34 pts

Not that promises made by companies mean spit. But Sony promised 10yrs of support fo the PS3. Assuming software support overlaps by two years like they did going from PS2 to PS3 I would be surprised to see it before 2014.

Zackarias-313 11 pts

I hope PS4 plays PSX, PS2 & PS3 games and upscales them all. This will probably never happen, but as a collector no backwards compatibility affects what I buy dramatically! I've had my PS3 fat since launch and it still works!!

Reaiko 5 pts

"PlayStation 4 will run on an AMD processor". I hope that means cheaper console and a better performance.

I talk about these rumors on my podcast every week! This info. is just about right and all we have right now. I suspect the next Xbox will play Blue Ray. Hopefully it won't be $500. Too muh! dude dudegamer.com

Real currency would make it simpler for the user, not the poor schmucks who would have to localize the interface and the store to convert every currency under the sun. Unless you're going to make everyone use U.S. Dollars. No way.

Thanks for the in-depth hardware predictions, Gamespot. I mean, who cares about gfx cards and all that "boring" stuff ..... :p

ManfromRedRiver 5 pts

sigh... the next gen consoles around the corner, and still no Kingdom Hearts 3 anywhere in sight...

montblanc512 5 pts

Maybe I'm getting old... okay, I'm 22, but still, I just can't get excited about any of these. It's been years since any console released a game I considered a must play that I can't just get for PC. And the gimmicks and fidelity pushing is actually more depressing than anything. I don't care about either of those, I want games. Seriously, the last game I actually sat down and played through on a console was Persona 4. I have all three consoles (PS3, 360, Wii), and a few older ones as well. The games coning out for consoles just don't excite me anymore, plus half of them look like something else that's already out.

CocaColaNinja 15 pts

Holy crap an Xbox 720 would be expensive as crap

Sk8rlink 5 pts

@yoyou225 first off I don't think there's any need for you to call names, frankly when you start calling people things is when your arguments are pretty weak, second I'd like to add that most games that have amazing graphics on the PC are also great games, have you played them? because if you haven't then you can't really argue right? I have a 360, a PS3 and a gaming PC, I sold my wii about a year after I got, the reason was that none of the games were exciting or enticing for me, so why have a console that has no games that you like, and I must point out that before the Wii I had had all the nintendo consoles, but thw wii didn't cut it, mind you since the gamecube I had started to tinker with xbox and PS2, and of course game design, story, great game mechanics are key to a good game, but they also rely on more powerful gaming machines, programmer and game devs have already said that for better AI, and better game worlds they need something as powerful as a modern day gaming PC, which frankly the 360 and the ps3 can't compare to, so before you start calling names on the internet, play the games, generate your own criteria and justify your opinion without being disrespectful. good day

DS-man 5 pts

@Sgthombre nintendo has always been about games and gameplay. Which to me is better, Id rather play a game that has great gameplay and bad graphics than a game that has awesome graphics than gameplay. Take Xenoblade chronicles (Wii) much better than Final Fantasy XIII (360/PS3)

Sgthombre 95 pts

At first I thought "What? WiiU won't play DVDs? Are you on crack?" But then when I actually thought about it, yeah, Nintendo is right. I already have a DVD player hooked up to the TV I would hook a WiiU up to if I got one, so there's no real point.

JGMRACING 5 pts

@johnblitz Ya, compare the graphics on GTA IV. Why not BF3? No, compare the graphics with a game that looks dated on any system...

Zelseisdabest 5 pts

@boodleout ur an idiot, this must be your first E3 this isn't the first time a company has listed games that are coming out for its system but shows gameplay from other systems

I bought at the start, my phat ps3 has been perfect, never even hovered the dust from it.

HipHopBeats 50 pts

@acer7x I am so glad I wasn't able to buy a console on launch at the start of this gen. I would have been mega pissed to spend \\$400 - \\$500 only to be mindf***ed by the red / yellow light districts, having to send in my console for repairs or youtubing a quick fix, playing scientist with a solder gun. 5 years later, I was finally able to bypass the list of pissed off gamers and purchase a 'slim' console at the right time when they finally got it right. I can already see tons of help threads ushering in the next gen with errors, over heating issues and God knows what else. Plus there are too many good games this gen to catch up on. Besides a few impatient adults, it's mostly kids who have time to get halfway through Skyrim on 11/11/2011 posting youtube vids of 'look how good a gamer I am' that are eager and anxiously waiting to platinum the next gen of games and make the leaderboards on release dates.

boodleout 5 pts

"Nintendo caused quite a stir at its E3 2011 presentation when it displayed a sizzle reel of games like Darksiders II, Metro: Last Light, and Dirt as if they were running on the Wii U. However the footage was actually derived from the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of the games." Wow. we all knew Nintendo were bad, overpriced and years behind competition but this is a horrifically plunging new low. HOW DECEPTIVE!

Technology never stops. Be happy the 3 big companies are trying to make you happy. Isn't it great to be a gamer with so many choices.

@Jonny_Boyz... PS3 better graphics? SURE~ this graphics comparison review sure proves your point.. http://asia.gamespot.com/features/6202552/p-4.html

All 3 new consoles will be there at E3 this year; PS4, Xbox 720, Wii U! They may not be in final form, but they have to be there for the sake of the future of each company. People are getting tired of the gimmicks. We gamers want something new and revolutionary to move our gaming truly forward. And another reinvention of the controller won't do it! I own and play all consoles, PC, Mac and portable games on whatever platform. I'm not a fanboy of any, but for the consoles PS3, 360 and Wii there getting left behind and they know it. PC games are stomping the consoles in graphical power and the gap keeps widening. The portable gaming markets are growing beyond leaps and bounds as more and more tablets and smartphones support them. The consoles need to keep up. My prediction, if you don't see a new console by the Big 3 at E3 this year you many never seem them at all because by 2013 they will be officially left behind!!!

All I care about is the fact Sony have Naughty Dog on board :D Means I'm buying the PS4 regardless! The Uncharted games are my favourite things ever.. in the history of time itself.

mreza555 6 pts

most of these says are rumor! lets talk about real things

@JGMRACING What you are wanting then is called the PS3...

TRIPLE_T83242 5 pts

@Sgt_Crow Well, Im 17 and I own and and play all the nintendo consoles except the wii. I spend 75% of my gaming time playing sports games and I don't really care for games like gears of war. I was only speaking from my experiences of most my friends getting a wii 5 years ago and now I don't know anybody that owns a wii. I just think now with a reduced price and bigger hard drive ps3s are the way to go. I understand though that your opions change more from 12 to 17 than 30 to 35.
