Four years after Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos delighted hard-core role-playing fans, Westwood Studios finally released a sequel. But while 1997's Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny received decent reviews, many veterans of the first game were disappointed with the sequel's reduced role-playing game elements and emphasis on more linear, adventure game-style gameplay. With Lands of Lore III, Westwood plans to return the series to its role-playing roots while retaining the accessibility and strongly story-driven experience offered by its predecessors.
Lands of Lore III, like the last game in the series, casts you in the role of a single preset main character. This time that character is Copper LeGre, an illegitimate nephew of King Richard, ruler of the Kingdom of Gladstone.

The half-dracoid outcast Copper is the reluctant hero of this Lands of Lore installment.

Notwithstanding his noble blood, good man Copper LeGre has led a life of virtual ostracism owing to his illicit origins. It seems that Copper's father, Eric, had a fling with a Dracoid serving wench, and Copper was the result of this night of revelry. A constant reminder of Eric's unfaithfulness, Copper is scorned by his stepbrothers and stepmother. His half-Dracoid heritage also makes him look slightly different from the rest of the citizens of Gladstone.
Copper LeGre's unpopularity changes one night when he, his father, and his brothers are attacked by extra-dimensional Rift Hounds, horrific beasts capable of tearing out the very souls of their victims.

The city of Gladstone offers you many allies and skills, which you'll need in order to stop a dimensional holocaust.

Copper's father and brothers are slain, and Copper barely survives by not-so-glamorously falling into a pit before one of the hellish dogs can fully rip Copper's life out of his body. Unfortunately for poor Copper, the mangy supernatural mutt manages to steal Copper's soul, and unless he can recover his essence, his body will wither away and die. Ironically, despite Copper's imminent demise, because of the unexpected thinning of the royal bloodline, he has instantly become the heir to Richard's throne.
