Unlimited Adventures, published
in 1993, was not a role-playing game at all, but rather, a role-playing
game construction set packed full of monsters, treasure, and maps held
over from the days of the gold box games.
No technical marvel even for
its time, Unlimited Adventures traded superficial beauty for substance.
Players had access to 127 different monsters (all of which could be edited;
and players could draw and add their own as well) to populate multipart
quests that could contain up to four different wilderness areas and 36
dungeon areas, each with as little or as much treasure as desired. Each
square could be tagged with up to 100 different events (text flag, combat,
discovery of treasure, etc.), which could be included or excluded at the
player's own discretion.
Though Unlimited Adventures
suffered a handful of shortcomings, including its poor graphics (especially
for the paltry few dungeon backgrounds) and its deceptively complex event
system, it proved to be an excellent tool for the patient adventure designer.
