If you're concerned about power consumption, unplug all those idle cell phone AC power adapters and other little user consumer device gobbling up power 24/7. Or stick them on a switchable power bar.
I got the 80GB fat upgraded to 120GB old style, & can't even fill that space. I don't play the console enough to justify buying a slim, like some have just for the hell of it, so I am fine with the fat. It's quiet enough for me, & like I said other than watching Bluray, & maybe playing a game here or there, there is no point to get the slim model energy efficient or not.
@mad_krips i threw the towel when i see that after the warranty of 1 year in europe the difference of getting yours repaired (well get a formated other repaired ps3) and a new slim ps3 was 20? -.- is this everywhere so, that the damn repair is sooooo exp ??
had 60gb, 80gb, now slim, if you need backcompability buy yourself a ps2, the slim is way more silent and also reduces feelable the energy if you need more usb buy yourself a hub im happy with my 500gb slim ^^
I'll take the backwards compatibility of my fat old PS3 over that chinsy, hippy-loving slim any day.
I wish running an automobile was this cheap. The cost of running an automobile 10, 15 or 20 hours per week for a year: $2,028, $3,042 & $4,056 (25 MPG, 30 MPH/h average, $3.50/g gas)
You won't "save the world" by switching to a slim. The energy saved is negligible. Besides, the newer slims have fewer features. For example, the slim removed usb ports, sd card ports, and PS2 Backwards Compatibility.
very impressive, nearly 50% less consumption across the board. Will get a slim in the future.
All this "save the world" stuff is really cool, I won't say it's not, I do want to preserve the planet, but I am not rich, I own both the 360 and PS3 "old versions", it's not that I can sell them cheap and buy the newer ones, as much as would like to.
Exactly why i use a generator attached to a bike. Kind of makes playing games a b*tch, though. :)
This is all good to know, and I'll definetly switch to a slim - if and when it's able to play ps2 games like my launch ps3.

Am I the only one that thinks the "fat" PS3 sounds quiet? I don't know anyone with a slim but I have the 160GB version that was bundled with the first Uncharted. It sounds quiet to me whether I'm gaming or watching a movie. My non-slim 360 without the game installed on the HDD, now that's loud...
Am still worried about the heat but with an adaptor it shouldn't be a problem... Is good to know about this info
I have PS3, TV, and surround sound all plugged into a power strip that a shut off when I'm not using it. No vampire hours.
Wow. I had no idea the original PS3 used that much more power. It still looks prettier though. ;)
Love my Slim.. I had a 60gb & that thing was hotter than a space heater! Not to mention noisy & YLOD..
Want to know how the Ultimate Way to REALLY SAVE MONEY Regardless of What Consoles you own? simply..Unplug your consoles and "Play Outside." You'll get fit too.
This would be cool, but the power consumption numbers are wrong. Making all of this false! Don't just read the technical specs in the PS3 manual and go with it. Pull out your multi-meter and actually test it. I did and the PS3 Launch system draws between 142 to 150 watts when idle. And 200 to 215 watts while gaming. I'm sure the slim is more efficient, but I wouldn't trust these numbers.
I just (regrettably) had to get rid of my 80GB Motorstorm, to get the new one. There are benefits of course, but I loved my fatty the way how it just looked clean and more stylish, and could play GTA San Andreas and Def Jam FFNY. Too many repairs now, 2 BR deaths and 2nd YLOD made me throw in the towel.
Why must I live in hawaii, everything is so expensive =[ ohh wait, i dont have to deal with smog or mainlanders, that's worth the .28 kWh =] plus i look outside and BAMM awesome nature!
its funny since i left my ps3 on all night before reading this damn sucks also since its the fat ps3
This is proof that the ps3 is better than the xbox 360 when it comes to performance, the ps3 uses more energy than the xbox 360, there for it is working harder! :P
@tyco_ex Maybe ... but I really like the ps3, becaus of the exclusives like God of War 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4, these games have made me buy my ps3. Another thing, I already use my pc to play WOW and other games in this genre. But what you are suggesting, is that I play Crysis or COD games on my pc ... no way. Build a PC with power for it It costs almost $ 2000 here in Brazil.
Pretty impressive how little energy the PS3 uses, even the launch one. My computer takes about 500 watts when I'm gaming on it, of course it's much more powerful too, but I'm still impressed how little power the PS3 uses. @Alvinegro7: My suggestion: Buy games from Steam and stick to PC gaming. It will be MUCH cheaper for you. The main reason people stick to consoles rather than PC's is that consoles are cheaper. Since you are spending so much on the console anyways you might as well go with the PC.
I second that comment you made. That's one of the reasons I bought a used 60GB over buying a slim as my first PS3 console. And then later I bought an imported GT5 Blue Slim PS3* as my second due to the fact that I'm a fan of that series and that I have lost my mind. *most of the time it's inside it's box
You Americans complain too much of you perfect life. We have to work hard, searching in the web a PS3 for R$ 900, this is the cheapest, because some places here are selling for almost R\$2000. Not to mention the price of games here, a joke, launches can cost almost $ 300, and the minority like me, order games by ebay or any other foreign site. And in this case, the games can not exceed $ 50,If thishappens, the taxes make this price rise a lot. Not to mention that, you have the PS3 done for you, owners of the world: Europe and USA. That is, for the European and US climate(Very cold) Here, I had to buy an cooler accelerator, that makes it work at maximum power, which cost me almost $ 100. If I had not done it, my ps3 would not last one year, with the Brazilian climatic conditions.Besides these "minor" problems... we do not have a Brazilian Playstaion Net Work,That means we have to create fake accountsand etc ... So do not complain about you "big" problems like: "The ps3 is so expensive" or " i just have two consoles" because you do not know how lucky you are!
Nothing beats a piano black finish ps3 beside a gun-polished silver Sony bravia 3D led tv. I just love the original version just because it looks hawt!!!
To all who say "what does it matter? I'm not paying for electricity": Grow up, move out, and find out that it does matter to who IS paying the bill... Kids...
