GameSpot's Preview ofGabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned

The Story
From his new home, his ancestral castle in Germany, Gabriel has been hired by a dethroned prince to investigate some mysterious intrusions into his estate. It seems his family has been plagued for years by what he calls the "Night Visitors" - apparently a vampiric cult. The night Gabriel arrives, Prince James' son is taken by these Night Visitors. Gabriel follows them by train to Rennes-le-Chateau, a small village in central Europe.

It is here in this mysterious village that the game begins. Like its predecessor, Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned starts out as a simple mystery, seemingly tied to some traditional horror-movie monster. But once Gabriel starts pulling back the layers, he finds the mystery of the Night Visitors, the abduction of Prince James' son, and the centuries-old mystery of Rennes-le-Chateau are all intricately linked.

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Gabriel arrives in Rennes-le-Chateau concurrently with a small tour group. Rennes-le-Chateau has historically been thought to be the hiding place of a great treasure, and each of these tourists has his or her own hope of unraveling the puzzle that will lead to the presumed fortune that is buried somewhere in the area. More mysterious is the fact that Gabriel's old friend, Detective Mosely from Sins of the Father, is along for the tour. Not exactly the most cosmopolitan of gentlemen, Mosely's presence is a mystery unto itself.

The presence of the group adds an interesting element of secrecy to the game. Among them may be the kidnappers or their associates. Complicating Gabriel's investigation is the fact that each of them has a theory about the treasure, and so each is guarded and secretive, taking late-night sojourns and hiding important information. Their mysterious actions may just be part of their attempts to find the riches before the others, or it may be part of a much more sinister agenda.

And Gabriel isn't even on the case, officially. Upon learning of the kidnappers' destination, Prince James immediately relieves Gabriel of his duties, sending a few of his men to unravel the mystery. But that, obviously, won't stop our hero from trying to unravel the enigma of Rennes-le-Chateau.

And what an enigma it is. Interestingly, the mysteries of Rennes-le-Chateau are real. A place of great riddles and strange historical events, the setting of the game plays as important a role as Gabriel himself.
