Stardock Entertainment's Derek Paxton and Paul Boyer take just one more turn with the GameSpot crew of Kevin, Tom, Caro, and Chris.
GameSpot GamePlay Episode 12: All Pandas Go To Heaven
Derek Paxton and Paul Boyer from Stardock Entertainment are in the house! They drop turn-based strategy knowledge bombs on Tom Mc Shea, Chris Watters, Carolyn Petit, and host Kevin VanOrd. Up for discussion: the difference between "ambition" and "scope," what would happen if your dog crapped out Scrabble tiles, and whether Contra was as hard as everybody says it was.

@Kevin-V Eddie updated his news story about the Dark Souls DLC. It's coming to North America the day before Europe, so Oct. 23. Yay!http://www.gamespot.com/news/dark-souls-dlc-hitting-xbox-360-ps3-oct-23-6396740
@push88 it's a game show in podcast form and Kevin is doing his best Wink Martindale impression and the contestants play for points that are very important. The contestants can spend the points at the GameSpot Office's f2p cash shop.
Also on the Piracy issue, a lot of older games (that aren't on GOG or somewhere else) are often only available for purchase used on ebay or amazon or something (and often at hugely inflated prices). In such a case you really aren't stealing from the devs or publishers, but actually from some a**hole who's trying to sell Breath of Fire for like $200 or whatever.
@Tom What about Viva Pinata (and sequel). To this day one of my favorite games. Only game I could ever get my at the time girlfriend to play with me. I know it didn't make bank, but surely rare was still making nice things?
@eyesandsmiles I love Viva Pinata (the first and the second). Everything Rare made under the Microsoft label was either excellent (Viva, Banjo, Jetpac), goofy fun (Ghoulies, Kameo), or interesting (Perfect Dark Zero). Only the Conker remake wasn't worth playing. It's a shame MS didn't nurture their creativity instead of destroying them.
@TomMcShea Thanks for the reply. I just try and bring that game up as often as possible, ha. Agree with you on all points. It's a shame there isn't room for Viva Pinatas in the economy based console world anymore. The current state of console gaming really turned me toward the PC. Lots of the same corporate crap, but anything and everything is there if you just look for it. Can't say that about consoles anymore.
@TomMcShea I could just be getting old now tho. Halos and the such use to excite me. Not in that place anymore.
Oh my god, I had Battle Toads on my original Gameboy and I literally never beat the second level... the one where your flying a ship though all these waves of spiked walls. I'd probably do better now but yea... it was stupid hard
@psuedospike There's no option for that, but I can make the overall volume louder next time if you think it's a continuing issue.
@Kevin-V Damn Soundcloud widgets, they probly dumbed down their normal embedding for the HTML5 one you use and discarded the volume button to look simpler. The problem is I always forget to turn down my Windows volume before pressing play and get blasted by your metro sounding theme. Oh well, thank for the reply.
If you want more Wing Commander, check out Wing Commander Saga. Bunch of modder guys took 10 years to make an unofficial sequal to Wing Commander using the upgraded FreeSpace Open game engine.
It's not hard to find... You can buy Earthbound on Ebay as well, although it costs $200+
or Amazon, if you prefer...
@WCK619 When I buy a game, it's partly to reward a developer for making something great. Paying a random person in Des Moines, who had nothing to do with the making of a game, defeats the whole point.
I don't pirate games nor do I plan on doing so in the future. I do understand pirating a game if there is no way for you to give your money to the developer to play it.
@TomMcShea "Business, how does it work?"
I don't think you need to go ask your boss what the Gamespot fanbase thought about 2007. You were here.
Sometimes, sometimes, companies can resolve their shortsightedness. Othertimes, there's too many lawyers to see through the fog.
@psuedospike Man, this is a really delicate issue. Ultimately, it would be ideal if publishers and developers were able to make their games available in some capacity so people didn't have to resort to underhanded practices to play them. Earthbound is particularly frustrating. Reggie has been repeatedly asked about bringing them to America and says things like "I love it but we can't bring it over" or other such nonsense. It's hard to be upset at pirates when companies willingly ignore their fanbase's wishes.
@TomMcShea You mean like the fan translated Mother 3...err Earthbound 2? I mostly agree with you on this. What do you think about import games that never got localized and the system is region locked? Is it OK to pirate then?
All pandas go to heaven......lol
good show, lots of terrible jokes that made me laugh....I love it :)
How do you know when the restaurant is serving panda? It was finger ling ling good! Bad joke and bad Chris Watters for not caring about pandas! Good podcast though XD
@g1rldraco7 I'll have you know that many of those three jokes were meant to raise awareness about the plight of pandas, both in the wild and in captivity. Socially conscious humor, yo!
@g1rldraco7 What's black and white, secluded and a little dopey? A panda! Or a nun.
@tightwad34 It's a podcast.
It looks like more than one. I know what a podcast is, but what does it mean to stream something?
@twillfast Just read a few comment sections and you will figure it out. You can almost figure it out just by the term itself, although I have a feeling you already know what it means.
@tightwad34 @carolynmichelle Streaming means essentially that it's playing while downloading to a temporary location. Anytime you watch a video on YouTube, you're streaming it - it's downloading the information, but it's not saving it. If you ever gotten the dreaded "buffering" whilst watching a video, that means you're getting a slow stream, either from your internet or from the server
