To create a more involving story for FreeSpace 2, Volition hired a full-time writer to flesh out the plot of the game. According to producer Jim Boone, this addition to the team allowed Volition to create a more sophisticated story. "[Hiring a writer] gave a much greater focus to the story for FreeSpace 2. We were able to get a lot more story into the missions themselves, which helps the overall feel of the missions."
FreeSpace 2 takes place three decades after the original. The shaky alliance between the Terrans and the Vasudans (which was formed to fight the technologically superior Shivans in the original) is still intact.

The events that ended the war with the Shivans, a large-scale battle in the jump node to the Earth's solar system, destroyed the jump node and caused Earth to become inaccessible to the Terran fleets.
Now, a faction of rebellious Terrans has once again declared war on the Vasudans. Complicating matters is the return of the Shivans, who are more powerful than ever.
