Far Cry 3 Game Guide

By Matthew Rorie

GameSpot's Far Cry 3 game guide helps you learn the most efficient ways to tame the jungle. Or... ways to set the world on fire.

Taking Down Outposts

Scoping out an outpost from a distance will make it much easier to tell what kind of forces you're facing.

One of the most recurrant complaints about Far Cry 2 was the respawning checkpoints that you'd constantly have to pass through. In Far Cry 3, Ubisoft listened, and now makes many of these checkpoints both out of the way of normal travel paths and conquerable, so that you can take them over and not have to worry about enemies patrolling in that zone again. Enemy outposts show up on your map as red flags, and you'll be able to spot the area of influence that they extend as a red heatmap. Inside this area, you'll come across numerous enemies performing car patrols, and hunting animals will be likely to draw the attention of nearby guards. In general, an enemy stronghold is going to make it more complicated for you to move and explore in a given area, so it's worth taking the time to take them over for your cause. Doing so will eliminate all randomly-spawning enemies in the area, and will also unlock new Path of the Hunter missions, which in turn will allow you to craft the biggest bags available to you. You don't need to take down a stronghold as soon as you spot it, though, and in practice you'll probably want to wait until you have access to a silenced sniper rifle before you make your assault.

If you wish, you can simply run into an outpost and kill everyone inside to take it over; there are generally five to seven foes inside the walls. When so alarmed, enemies will call for reinforcements, which will add to the forces lining up against you and make your job a bit tougher. However, going loud greatly reduces the rewards you get for taking over strongholds; killing everyone within without being spotted and without tripping an alarm will net you almost triple the experience that'd your earn otherwise, so it's always worth at least attempting a stealthy approach before simply murdering everyone. Here are a few tips to help you proceed.

So, Mr. Bad Guy, you wanted to cage up a tiger in your little outpost? How's that working out for you?

  • When approaching a stronghold, get out of your car a couple hundred meters away and scout using your camera. You'll want to try and scout from a couple of different vantage points, preferably elevated ones, to ensure that you spot as many enemies within the stronghold as possible. While you're at it, scout the nearby wilderness to tag animals nearby; predators like tigers and bears may force you to whip out a loud weapon, which in turn might alert the guards of your presence.
  • Find a spot between 100 and 200 meters from the camp that offers a clear line of sight and enough tall bushes to hide in. Stay crouched at all times, and if an enemy's awareness meter starts to rise up on your HUD, turn around and try to move away as quickly as possible.
  • After tagging as many of the enemies as you can, start drawing up a plan of attack. If you're sniping, you'll want to try and take down enemies that are out of sight of everyone else first, to avoid alerting the remaining foes. Snipers and other enemies on rooftops are a good first choice, since no one will spot their body when they fall.
  • When you first start hearing shouts of alarm from the guards, stop firing. The guards will now be aware that someone's out in the hills, will vary their movement patterns, and will probably come out to look for you. Now would be a good time to move around the perimeter of the camp and find another sniping spot. Shooting rapidly, even with a silenced rifle and from cover, will often lead to the guards making a beeline for your position. If you avoid detection long enough, the guards should head back to camp and resume their normal behavior.
  • Many, but not all, of the strongholds will have caged animals inside the walls. Why? No particular reason aside from the fact that they'll make it easier for you to create a diversion. You can shoot the front wall of an animal cage to blast it apart, causing the animals within to go crazy and attack any nearby guards. You'll usually want to try and snipe a guard or two with a headshot, then break apart the animal cage as soon as the remaining guards start becoming alarmed. If you can take out a few guards before unleashing the animals, there'll be fewer of them to attack the beasts, and they'll be more likely to kill a guard or two before being killed themselves. Not all animals are created equal, though: a trapped bear or tiger will be a lot more effective at killing enemies than will trapped dogs or cassowarys. With luck, the animals will kill all the remaining guards, but if not, they'll at least weaken and confuse them enough for you to take out the remainders. It's a good idea to reposition while the animal attack comme
  • If everything goes poorly, you can run 300 meters away from the outpost to reset all of the enemies. This doesn't seem to eliminate any alarms that have been set off, though, so you may simply wish to exit and reload if you're dedicated to getting the fully silent reward.
  • It's difficult, but you can sometimes force predators into outposts by setting fields aflame or by shepherding them with gunfire. This will almost always alarm the outpost to your presence, though, so it's often not worth the effort. It's fun, though!
  • The outposts on the south island will often have one or two headshot-immune heavies. Get ready to get up close and personal with these guys and take them out with takedowns.

Note that taking out outposts will, again, cause all enemies in that part of the map to stop spawning. If you eliminate all outposts, the game world can feel a bit empty while you’re exploring, aside from random wild animal attacks. That’s a shame, but there’s no real way around it!

Hi all,

I'm playing fc3 on ps3 but got stuck at killing Hoyt in the knife fight.

I get only 3 buttons, the X, the square, the O, but then no fourth button!

Each time Hoyt stabs me and I die.

Saw a clip where the player also at first got only 3 buttons but after reloading he got the fourth, a square again.

Still I only get 3 buttons

Anyone know what to do?

Thanks

@danielpap

Here's what I used:

Round 1- X, Square, O, Square

Round 2- Square, O

Round 3- Square, O, X

Round 4- Square, O, Square, O

Its all in the timing. Hitting key early better than late.

Hope that helps. Took me a few tries to get the timing.

Me saying games cant be blamed was a lil unexplained, games can be blamed if false or true, butThey cant be blamed for people actions in this context, they can be blamed for things that dont pertain to human behavioral actions , its the persons personal choice, oh and just in my opinion i love farcry 3 havent picked up another game and have had my mind buried in the game bcuz its so addicting lol

xTRUExPASSIONx
xTRUExPASSIONx

1998 was one of the best gaming years on record, and games will never be like they you to thats why their considered classics, just like cars and movies, they change with time and theres haters that always bash the new or the old and so on, the best way to look at things in my opinion is respect the originals and the glory they brought to the gaming industry and enjoy the new experiences game designers try to bring, i have high respect for the gaming community not only because im become a game designer and am an avid gamer, but because of how much ridicule and blame that news and others throw at us blaming us for the school shootings and numbing of violence in children, which even with all the testing and experiments we get put through always come up in conclusive, why? Because just like cars are responsible gor drunk drivers or guns arnt reposible for killing people, games are a form of entertainment and cant be blamed for anything, and we have ratings for a reason, the human pschy in each person is different in each person and different things can trigger a more violent ir numbing reaction, anyway enough rambling and going off topic, games go up and down, each person has preferences, so dont blame the game , its just not your thing, and play the game atleast through half in my opinions, tutorials and first few missions arnt a good first opinion in most cases if it starts off bad

It is an outstanding game and I'm astounded that the camera/stones glitch is not being discussed here ? having looked into it since glitching 2 days ago I have discovered posts related to this bug  on forums from WEEKS ago ! it breaks the game for us affected by it as you cant continue the story without the camera SPOILER ALERT (scripted spotting of enemies )and you cant abandon this particular mission and at least enjoy the free roam which is terrific.

@peterb2222 try firing on the Nostalgia from a gunboat w a machine gun. you can take out many of  the enemy that way, including the sniper up top. Enjoy - the machine gun has limitless ammo. 8-)

If you can't pass something in Far Cry 3, lower the difficulty. If that doesn't work, you should give up gaming all together.....

I can't believe how many people are complaining about Ubisoft being on top of the patches.  I remember when Black and White came out (with equal hype), it was almost unplayable, and Lionhead went on vacation and didn't release the first patch for months.  You do realize they don't burn the dvds the day before launch, right?

miser_cz

I guess Im in the minority but I am extremly dissapointed in farcry3.The 1st mission where 3 guys drive u to an enemy camp and tell u to secure it.So I go running in proceding to chase the stupid enemy around the camp blowing each one easily away.(they dont seem to notice me running up to them, pointing my gun and blowing out their brains). Then my fellow soldiers come into camp praising me for a job well done and how I impressed them. The 2nd time I repeated this mission I stood at the crossroad to the camp and just fired off a few rounds. My fellow soldiers me to watch it with my gun, then the enemies came running down the road and while I hid in the woods, my soldiers killed all the enemy and once again praised me for my bravery and skill. How is this challenging? And its not very open world when I can only move around the mission area("mission will fail if u leave mission area").And I dont need big flashing dots to follow someone or to tell me where to go or who to kill.Too much handholding.(play"Black Mesa" and you will see what I mean.) I said I wouldnt buy farcry3, but I gave it a chance, and once again, Im dissappointed.

I have a right to complain;I paid over 50.00$ for this...game.As a matter of fact, I bought all 3 far cry gamesfor 50.00$ each(thats 150.00$ total for the math deficient) and I only really liked the 1st one(even with its flaws). And farcry3 is not as open world as games like: crysis1  ,stalker(all 3 games),elder scrolls - oblivian and skyrim, and others.

and the idea that they force me to install their crapware "uplay" to play the game.  if I had known, I never would have bought the game!

@doktron Have you played it past the first mission?  You are judging the game on the first mission alone?  This is one of the most open world games I have seen for a FPS and the mission area only applies when you have an objective on the go, not just exploring.

How do you think they sell a game to 10 year old kids that have hard to play game..and all the flashing signs to let yo no which way you can or can't find anything, or you leave the little stamp maps ( It seems to me they had to make close in fighting on the latest games to cope with small maps to run on consoles/ boy I remember the good old days when map size wasn't a problem when playing on a computer ) I played Far Cry original and still have more fun than the new # 2 they put in to try and make it better but in my view they broke the darn game..Now it's just a mindless game to make money off the original that was awesome to play. Only thing I like about the new game is the SHARK and it was sent over from the original to give the new one some substance LOL..........CHEERS

@doktron This is why I dont buy before I hear the sorrow of those who do.   I was you once.  I had trust in those that made games.  This sadly is the trend of gaming gaming now.  Like the fall of the Romans, the golden age is passed and we fearfully await the barbaric Huns to invade and finish the fat fuc*s that feed on what's left of what was once great.

@moc5  @Metroididiot  @doktron .  I try not to let the glory days ruin what fun times there are left to be had... There is such a thing as being overcritical, and it seems Dok has taken that route. What game has perfect A.I.?

That first camp, is just an intro to the structure of the camp system... All the other camps you can approach from any direction you wish and by any means. Want to hang-glide into the camp, land on a roof, then ambush a distracted foe from above? You can do that. The same can't be said for many out games out right now...

FC3 may not be the best game I've ever played, but it gets my vote for GOTY.
