Winter 1998

Fallout told the story of a world reeling from the devastation of full-scale nuclear disaster. And just as Fallout's stylized introduction showed an ignorant world taken completely by surprise by the exceedingly dangerous power within its grasp, so did the game itself arrive without warning or fanfare. The last anyone heard of the game before its release was that Interplay lost Steve Jackson's GURPS role-playing game license. The situation looked bleak as the game went back to the drawing board: Fallout was delayed, and subsequently sank into obscurity.

An enhanced suit of power armor may be yours in Fallout 2.
After a long computer RPG drought, broken by the occasional lukewarm or bug-ridden release, Interplay's Fallout finally hit the store shelves in the winter of 1997. And against all odds, it turned out not only to be satisfying, but also original, witty, endearing, and attractive. Many role-playing gamers immediately hailed Fallout as the harbinger of a computer RPG revival, and the praise continued through to the end of the year when several gaming publications, including GameSpot, awarded Fallout with top honors.

Your first order of business as the legendary Vault Dweller's descendent is to find his old uniform.
The first law of computer gaming is that any and all success begets subsequent attempts to achieve more success, so it came as no surprise that mere weeks after Fallout's release, Interplay announced a sequel for the following year. That sequel would incorporate many of the same features as the original game, but would attempt to fix all those problems that surfaced in the original, even as it delivered much more of what fans wanted to experience. And now, as Fallout 2 begins to take shape, it is becoming increasingly clear what Fallout fans can expect from the sequel upon its release this winter. It promises to be more refined and much longer than the original, though it perforce will lack its predecessor's originality and high production values. Yet Interplay remains convinced that Fallout 2 will be every bit as satisfying. Find out why, right down to the detail, in the pages that follow, starting with the story and setting of the game.
