Gabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
The third installment in Jane Jensen's critically-acclaimed adventure game series, Gabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned sets up a web of occult mystery and intrigue involving ancient vampires and the roots of religion. In the game, Knight must investigate a supposed cult of vampires in the small European city of Rennes-le-Chateau (a real place with a real mysterious history - Sierra's Gabriel Knight III site has links to all sorts of intriguing information on the locale).

The story involves a kidnapping, political and religious intrigue, and reportedly has an incredibly controversial ending that has caused quite a hubbub at Sierra.Gabriel Knight III marks the return of Tim Curry as the voice of Gabe, and some popular characters (such as Detective Mosely from the first Gabriel Knight game) will make an appearance as well.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine

It's 1947, and the Cold War is just beginning its insidious spread. Soviet agents have been ordered by the Russian government to search the ruins of the fabled Tower of Babel for an ancient machine that could unlock a legendary interdimensional gate. Indiana Jones is the one person capable of preventing the device from falling into the wrong hands. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine will be a real-time 3D action/adventure. The game will lock players in a race around the globe to thwart the Soviets' frantic search for clues to the mysterious Infernal Machine. The game takes Indy to all sorts of exotic locales, ranging from the ruins of ancient Babylon and mysterious Tian Shan Mountain region in Kazakstan to the Aztec pyramids in Teotihaucan and beyond.

The 3D graphics looked quite good, and Indiana Jones moved smoothly about his environments. It may evoke a sense of Tomb Raider at first, but the sharply detailed characters and levels do their job in reminding you of this game's source material, and thoughts of Lara quickly fade.

The Real Neverending Story

Based on Michael Ende's children's novel (also the inspiration for the movie and the Limahl song), The Real Neverending Story is a 3D action/adventure set in the land of Fantasia. You play the Saver, a hero chosen by the Childlike Empress to rescue the land from destruction by the Nothing. As if that weren't surreal enough, you'll also encounter characters such as Gmork, the Fan, and Amalia the Ugly. The Real Neverending Story uses Discreet Monsters' MonsterEngine 1.0, which purportedly "combines a 3D real-time indoor engine with a revolutionary 3D real-time outdoor engine with free-flowing transition between the two."

The game turned out to be quite a nice surprise in its showing at E3. The developers look like they've got some uniquely creative minds working on bringing the creatures and characters to life. The fresh look and moody colors were impressive, so we can only hope that the gameplay interactions hold up to them. It moved as smoothly as a 3D first-person action adventure should, and the environments were immersive and other-worldly. Here's to hoping that they find an appropriate American distributor so that this game receives the distribution it seemingly deserves.
