Thief: The Dark Project
Publisher: Eidos
Developer: Looking Glass
Release: Fall 1998

While it has been somewhat shrouded in secrecy since its announcement last year, Looking Glass' Thief: The Dark Project (originally entitled The Dark Project) is shaping up to be a most interesting game. Much of this interest is simply due to the game's pedigree: It marks Looking Glass' first foray into a 3D game environment since the critically acclaimed science-fiction thriller System Shock and promises to be another excellent addition to a lineage that also includes the classic Ultima Underworld games.

Employing Looking Glass' proprietary Dark Engine, Thief is a 3D fantasy action-adventure, which the company site proclaims is "in the Underworld tradition." In the game you assume the role of a thief named Garret who has been hired to steal an artifact. Sixteen mission areas will be included, with environments like abandoned churches and sewers. It's a safe bet that Thief will have a strong story driving the action; interesting tales have been the highlight of previous Looking Glass adventures.
