Publisher: Electronic Arts Developer: Electronic Arts Release: Fall 1998 Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit arrives for the PC this fall, hot on the heels of the PlayStation version. Touting multiple new licensed cars, 3D-enhanced graphics, and gameplay featuring cops in hot pursuit, Need for Speed III hopes to build on the success of the PlayStation version by offering a level of detail only possible on the PC. New features will include dashboard views, downloadable new cars, 3D graphics support, and multiplayer capabilities through a serial link, split-screen, and a local area network. Eight courses with real-world settings will offer shortcuts and alternate routes. You will also have the option to play as a police officer or to be pursued by the police. The game's AI will provide competitors with individual personalities who will retaliate differently depending on what moves a player makes. If the computer competitors are aggravated or challenged then they will increase speed, aggression, blocking, and ramming. Three difficulty modes will also be provided: novice, rookie, and pro. The novice setting will feature limited aggression, the rookie mode will offer fewer assists, and the pro mode must be earned and will contain no assists. There will be a practice mode with a ghost car so that you can practice against yourself. You will also have the ability to customize cars with different colors and performance options such as adjustable gear ratios, engine power, and brake settings. Different weather conditions will have corresponding road surface effects, with rain making for slippery roads and snow for slick icy roads. Need for Speed III will also feature multiple camera views and tracks that can be raced backwards or in mirror mode.
