Once the dust has finally settled on the Electronic Entertainment Expo, there's one question on every gamer's mind: What was the best game of the show? Naturally, we meditated on the answer to this all-important inquiry for some time. And after careful deliberation and considerable debate, GameSpot was nonetheless unable to narrow it down to a single winner. The fact is many, if not most, of the games at the show looked rather good; the industry has come a long way, and standards for quality are substantially higher than ever before. Of course, while agreeing on a winner proved futile, GameSpot's editors were able to cite several dozen games from the show that looked especially promising. We debated and narrowed down our list to a lean top 20.

What follow are GameSpot's selections, presented in alphabetical order, as the best games shown at E3 and why we think they're going to be the best games in the coming months. Because sequels were so pervasive at the show, we split our top 20 down the middle between those games that are part of established franchises and the bolder originals.

The Originals
Everyone complains that almost every game is a sequel, and it's easy to throw around trite statements like "The game industry has a bad case of sequelitis!" But the fact is that there were quite a few noteworthy non-sequels shown at E3. To select the most distinguished of these, we looked at games that promised something beyond what we've come to expect. We debated whether or not certain games were just standard genres with a "hook" ("it's real-time strategy, but we took out the strategy!") or whether they actually had the potential to bring something new to PC gaming. In the end, we narrowed it down to ten, with a focus on those you haven't heard about a dozen times already. The following ten games remain the most talked-about games among the GameSpot editorial staff and the games we're most excited about getting our hands on in the coming months.
