Gabriel Knight III: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
Publisher: Sierra Studios
Developer: Sierra Studios
Release: Fall 1998

A new chapter in Jane Jensen's acclaimed Gabriel Knight series is reason enough to get excited. The second game in the series, The Beast Within, featured one of the best stories ever told in a computer game, involving werewolves, Bavarian history, and a lost Wagner opera. The premise of Gabriel Knight III promises to be equally complex and intriguing. Centered around a small village in France, the game weaves a tale of kidnapping, vampires, and religious mysteries.

Sierra is promising that Gabriel Knight III will have a more "intimate" feel than its predecessors. This intimacy is mostly due to the fact that the game centers around the kidnapping of a dethroned Prince's son, and there is a limited number of suspects to interview and investigate.

But the fact that it's a new Gabriel Knight game is just one reason to get excited. Gabriel Knight III replaces the sprite-based gaming of the first game and the full motion video of the second with a brand-new, proprietary 3D engine. And it's impressive. You have complete control over the camera within a certain region, and characters respond to your commands. The engine also supports 3D acceleration, with detailed textures and realistic light sourcing.

Gabriel Knight III will be released this fall and, based on the two chapters that have come before, is a shoo-in for one of the best adventures of 1998.
