Sony's Home is one of the most highly anticipated titles on the PlayStation 3, and it has the potential to revolutionize the way users interact online. However, there's no doubt it's taken a long time to come to fruition. At the Sony E3 2008 press conference, the company reiterated Home's importance to the platform and promised that it would release an open beta in the third quarter of 2008.

The Square       Marketplace       Theater       Game Space

Home is designed to bring together Sony's three key interests: gaming, music, and movies. The home square is the embodiment of this intention and houses a gaming arcade, a movie theatre, a music zone, as well as shops and meeting areas.

Bowling Alley       The Lanes       Split?

The games arcade allows you to play simple games against other people from right inside Home. These include such games as chess, pool, and bowling--all of which could be described as simple but addictive minigames. From our preliminary look at the pool game, the physics feel good, but they won't compete with a proper stand-alone pool sim.

Music Zone       Dancing

In the music zone, you'll be able to listen to communal music and make your character dance along to the music. A menu system allows you to choose from different dancing styles, and we were shown a particularly funny robot dance. Sony hasn't confirmed whether you'll be able to buy music here, but we expect it's a feature that's being considered.

The cinema holds a lot of potential, especially because it will allow you to watch movies with friends. Sony is being coy about content and pricing at this stage, but with a movie division, as well as a new download service, it's likely that such a Sony title as Spider-Man is being lined up for an appearance.

Apartments       The Deck       The Inside

Your living space will be the most personal aspect of Home because it will be viewable by invitation only. The demo apartment that we saw was small, but it overlooked a beautiful dock complete with expensive yachts and circling seagulls. We pressed Sony on the cost of owning such an apartment, but the reps wouldn't be drawn on prices--all they said was that you could own many different properties if you wanted.

Although Home is set to be a free download for PlayStation 3 owners, Sony will make money from paid downloads and sponsorship. Posters and video walls adorn the public areas, plus there will be specific zones sponsored by individual companies or products. Sony mentioned that Nike is involved, and we were told that Ubisoft broadcast its Ubidays event within the current beta version. Seeing next year's Sony E3 briefing through Home is just one of the possibilities opened up by the software.

Resistance Zone       Uncharted Zone       Warhawk Zone

One of the ways that products and brands will get involved in Home is through specific zones. Sony demonstrated zones with two games--Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Warhawk. The Uncharted zone took the form of a bar where you could sit down and have a drink, play an arcade game, or even watch old movies on the black-and-white TV. There were also locked doors that could be opened by finding codes hidden around the bar. The Warhawk zone had a much more military feel and featured a sandpit where you could plan tactics before seamlessly jumping into a game.

With so many different areas to visit, getting around the world of Home could be difficult. However, the application uses a simple map system that allows you to move from zone to zone just by clicking on the maps. The same ease of use applies to communication because you'll be able to use a Bluetooth headset to talk or a USB keyboard to type messages.

Sony is keen on continually offering something new within Home and promises to update the system as often as possible. The application will also be tailored to individual territories, with the American home square looking bigger and grander than the European one we saw recently. However, the plan is that all PlayStation 3 owners will be able to download the open beta in Q3 2008, so we'll get to find out even more about it soon.

this game is one of the reasons that i liked ps3 more than xbox but until i saw it,it was the worst thing ever, pay real money for everything, now i think it really better to pay 49$ for xbox live gold i mean great xbox market great avatars amazing online gameplay in halo 3 and left 4 dead and gears of war what do you want more, tekken is coming to xbox any way so this is a reason so you dont buy a ps3,the only thing will make buy ps3 blu-ray disc,daulshock3,mgs4,little big planet, and the browser to surf the web,at the end sony wasted three years for this junk.

lol i deleted it because something really pi$$ed me off
everything was cool and pretty fun to explore until i went to the mall
you have to spend real money for virtual furniture
    wat the f***
im not gona pay 99 cents for a video game sofa
they should make a points service lyk if you win sum games in bowling or make a highscore or even for your trophies
i really dont know 1 person that would actually spend real money on video game furniture
if any1 bought something from home then you should slap yourself in the face right now!
you know not many ppl spend the day on ps3 so sony shouldve made the xmb crossbar different
    like the 360 did
i saw it and the nxe looks awesome way better than that arcadey flipbook one
all im saying is that i would be just as satisfied if they changed the start up screen
right now its the psp screen and they should change it up
i really enjoy sonys products and im always gona keep my ps3 but im never gona pay for video game furniture
whoever thought of that should suk on these nuts

I own a PS3 and have seen the New XboX experience.

Home does not compare to XBL, PSN does. Home is something far biger and better. The feature set is has is something astounding. Even M$ with the NetFlix deal is trying to close some gaps before Home is out because they know, people will be addicted to home.

Whats one of the biggest problems with recruiting clan members?
you dont know ish about them besides their numbers.
Picture you discussing soccer (footbal, i just dont want mistranslations) on the interval with the rest of the guys...and then jumping straight to the game.

And just this social part is an absolute strong point for the PS3.

And if youre a truly gamer you want to know the latest (you wouldnt be here otherwise) wouldnt you like to come home after a hard working day, grab a beer, sit comfortably on the sofa, turn the PS3 and watch ubidays for example?
WTF, who wouldnt want to watch an E3 presentation from their home (the real home) with full 1080p resolution?

    And oh, thats all free!!!!!

i like the way sony is going with this, makes me want a ps3. but u guys who r like "xbox live is over" etc. etc., i mean, really... stfu. imo xbox live still a superior service and just because m$ doesn't want to focus on a world like home doesn't mean that live is worse. 5$/month... oh woe is me.... i mean.. im guna be playing video games, not home.

    EDIT: graphics are beautiful btw

I'm Lovin the idea of home, it sounds like such a great thing, i've just been wonderin a few things tho, will PS3 ever allow users to play their own audio track in place of videogame soundtracks without nullifing game audio like sound effects? and when will we ever go back to those days of PS1 with games so long they require four disks to hold all the info? they were great and had so much play time, now we don't even fill a whole disk for a game.

Seems great, I hope they'll have it ready and going in 2009 since there aren't too many good games on PS3 that aren't available on PC :/ and my PC runs games in higher res than PS3. Although blueray, GTA IV and Fight Night Round 3 were worth buying PS3. BTW GTA IV will look way better on PC, too bad they didn't get all out of PS3 in GTA.

Home will be effin' sweet as sony(for once) are correct to take their time to get this right when they've consistently messed up with the online possibilities. whereas Microsoft have embraced online better so far they still can't make a console that works. 5 360's in 7 months was enough for me(and I've got mates who've had even more die on them)plus uncharted kicks gears any day of the week-and i like Gears of War it just isn't what it's made out to be. i'd rather play Metoid three on my own on the Wii than EVER play Halo, even with the goddam queen or whoever-dull.
