The Gamescom DOTA 2 tournament is under way! Check out all of the latest action.
This year, Gamescom isn't just Europe's biggest gaming event. It's also playing host to the official unveiling of Valve's DOTA 2 and its first-ever tournament. For those of you who don't know, DOTA (or Defense of the Ancients) originally spawned as a Warcraft III mod that was based on an original Starcraft map, and since that time, it has developed an enormous following. The game puts players in control of a single hero that fights alongside automatically generated allies. This hero has special skills and attacks (that vary depending on the hero selected), which can be upgraded over the course of a match. These skills, combined with some strategy, aid in achieving the ultimate goal of invading an opponent's base and destroying key structures.
DOTA 2 is a stand-alone game from Valve (Blizzard is working on its own version of DOTA) and, therefore, doesn't have any ties to the Warcraft universe, but its characters and attacks are still based on those featured in the original game. You can find the tournament schedule here and watch the action unfold below.

blizzard's own DOTA 2, WTF what to play if the comes out? we have HON, LOL , DOTA 2 valve then DOTA 2 blizzard??
So you came to add this commend to show us how cool you are that you know what DOTA actually means? Some of us have a lot more to say than just 13 words and prefer to use abbreviations so we can say what we have to say a bit faster.
For those who don't memorize stupid, lazy abbreviations, that's "Defense of the Ancients".
@metaltorn Yeah, believing A in all classes in high school will make you a sucess in adult life is a REAL good start :) Anyway, have fun, I'm not your parent (and the world needs someone to wash cars too).
@metaltorn How about we stop making claims we can't prove, alright? And not just metaltorn. And I don't want any of that "I don't care what you think" crap. How about some heads up on who are you guys thinking is going to win the tournament?
@metaltorn Not really, but I really with I was a better student and read more outside of class in my first college time. I'm much more dedicated now. Just giving you a reality check. Being averse to reading doesn't make you cool, it makes you poor. Chicks don't dig poor guys.
@Metaltorn i went to this link to see videos not to read, i do enough of that in college. what do you do sit on your @$$ in front of the computer for days on end? and yeah i already knew this game is still in production. Lol, with that mentality you're in for a wild ride in adulthood. Market cashier is best case scenario.
@metaltorn well did mean either to start a war, but just thought it was a bit lame question since the there are not much info about this game and there is long time to release day to say if it is F2P or P2P since you know valve are very secretly with their products... But yeah not enemies sounds good :)
Damn I hope there wasn't an achievement tied to this :P at least I can watch them after the fact.
@fealas: The first time you've seen or heard about DOTA2? How goddamn big is that rock you're living under?
@Baked-Calbee I am not saying that denying is my game. I am just saying that I think it makes the game a little interesting. And believe me that I am one of the few who do not regard League of Legends as a noob game because you can't deny. League of Legends is cool too, but I don't really have enough time to play more than 1 MOBA game and still playing the new cool released single-player games. I am trying to make time but if I do manage I will would like to try out HoN, because even if it is an exact copy of DOTA I would like to try it for the graphics.
@feleas i dont know why you made that comment at me. i didnt even talk about LoL just about blizzard. so you should learn to read before you post a comment about someone else. And when i said they hired the kid that made dota i was basically referring to Icefrog. so stop being such a douche
@Zulzon while i do agree denying creep kills is very important part of the game, but overall is not very engaging in terms of action. I watched few of these games and on the dota2 website as well, one thing i notice is the fact that within 30mins of the game, players were still under lvl 12 or 14, while the game itself is interesting such as ganking and well usage of heroes. But if denying is ur game for the first 10-20mins of the game, then i rather play LoL :)
@Majkic666 you know i don't got time to make enemies right now or ever. forgot what i said. i just watched the videos didn't feel like reading. thats it you pointed the obvious and it pissed me off. i've got over it and you should too, what do you say?
@metaltorn Wow are you trying to start a flame war now... Its funny though i got time to read my studies + i can read an article instead of asking stupid questions and beside if you are college material it shouldn't be a problem to read 1 or few page(s) instead of asking questions like that
@Majkic666 i went to this link to see videos not to read, i do enough of that in college. what do you do sit on your @$$ in front of the computer for days on end? and yeah i already knew this game is still in production.
@kenshingr yes, you just said what I said. Eul and Guinsoo created the original DoTA. Therefore, Icefrog isn't the creator of DoTA, he's merely the guy who improved it. So Valve did NOT hire the creators of DoTA. /end conversation
@feleas No. Eul and then Guinsoo created the original DotA map but in 2004 he left it to Icefrog. The result was that Icefrog improved the game so much that it became a huge success. People were buing Warcraft 3 just to play DotA and didnt even bother with the actual war3 game. So, Guinsoo became jealous and created LoL. After that, Valve became jealous and employed Icefrog. There you have it! -.-
To be honest , Dota 2 seems very nice. None true DOTA gamer can deny that. Here is the big BUT though. Terrain and environment details are good. I like the art of it. What this game is missing though is , champions personality. Most seems like big bugs or just a little better animated and flashy minion in some occasions... and i mean it. I watched more than 5 full games of the tournament , all felt the same to me whatever heroes been choosen. SO in short the art direction of stages and maps its solid where champions design, art and all need more personality imho. I know game isnt even in beta yet and its DOTA afterall but thats my thoughts. Game, as i see it now , doesnt feel so great as i was hoping for. Far from release yet just my opinion here.
Never even heard of the game. Looks like PvP in World of Warcraft. I'm sure there is a lot of skill and strategy involved, but it just doesn't look that exciting to me. If there were more players and treasure to be gotten, and buildings and land to be claimed, it would be more exciting I think. I guess I would have to play it for myself.
@Zulzon and yet it still has the full price of what it did when released (On Battle.net)
@2bitSmOkEy Well I waited so long for Starcraft 2 to come out that I kinda lost the passion for the game. I didn't even get the game earlier than 3 months after it appeared.
@TrueIori I really dont hope not.... because then its gonna end up like TF2 which pretty much ruins the game... i would rather buy the game and as i play progress with winning money and spending it on new characters, and lvling stuff up
@TrueIori Well it might be, but who knows? But when Blizzard release their DOTA, that one will surely be pay-to-play.
I applaud the effort of following some esports but why not get in on the SC2 action? That is where the real magic happens :D
@Zulzon err there actually a good chance that Dota 2 can be f2p since it been said that Valve been working on a f2p project that not team fortress 2.
