Freedom Guard Strategy
Your starting position might look pretty good, but it isn't. This is really the first challenging Freedom Guard mission. You cannot hold on to the freshwater springs, which you have in your possession at the beginning of the level, so don't even try. Instead, pull all of your forces back to your base and concentrate on defending the freshwater spring immediately to the east of your base and the one to the southwest (the closest one to your base). It may be worthwhile to move an additional Spider Tank or two down to the southernmost freshwater spring on the east side of the map - the Imperium will almost immediately send a Freighter there. The forces you start with at that location will have difficulty taking out the Freighter before Imperium reinforcements arrive, but if you get those Spider Bikes there to help, you should be able to deprive the Imperium of one Freighter, which will slow its advance. With the 1,000 credits you start off with, immediately build another Freighter to start harvesting additional water. Redirect your other Freighters (other than the one getting Taelon) to the two springs.
Start building some turrets in front of your two freshwater springs - build a second Water Launch Pad near the freshwater spring to the east and build a repair station near the other one. Build a bunch of mercenaries and march them south along the path leading to the freshwater spring closest to your base, then phase them and leave them there, even if you see other units pass by. Morph a few scouts and send them out to watch for approaching Imperium units - knowing where your enemy is located is especially important for success in this mission. Group some Spider Bikes so that they'll be able to respond quickly to threats. Skirmish Tanks, with their superior range, should be used to back up your turret walls. You'll constantly be attacked by Hover and Tachion Tanks, but don't get lured into fighting the Tachion Tanks in battles with equal forces on both sides. Instead, let your turrets do the bulk of the work. If the Tachion Tanks start pounding your turret wall but are out of range of your turrets, unphase your mercenaries and attack the Tachion Tanks from behind. You should be able to take them out quickly before they can redirect their fire at you.
Don't worry too much about saving money at the beginning of the level, even though it is the ultimate goal of the mission. Spend enough to maintain your defense. Eventually, you'll want to start expanding again. Build a few Construction Rigs and march them with escorts to the next closest freshwater spring. Don't move from outside the safety of your turret wall until your scouts have confirmed that the coast is clear. Once at the spring, build some turrets and another Water Launch Pad. You might want to build another HQ to keep a steady supply of Construction Rigs coming to create an effective turret wall. Once you've established a pretty good defense, you can sell off some of the turrets around the other freshwater springs and move the resulting Construction Rigs south to help you keep expanding. Continue this strategy until you have four or five springs under your control, at which point you'll easily hit the 30,000 credits you need to complete the mission.
That's all you have to do to win this mission, unless you just can't rest until you throw a few bricks at the Imperium base. Use Skirmish Tanks to take out the Plasma Turrets, but look out for entrenched Tachion Tanks. Expect some serious losses if you try to attack the Imperium base without successfully luring the Tachion Tanks out from the safety of the Plasma Turrets. The best way to approach the Imperium base is probably from the east at the bottom of the map.
