Freedom Guard Unit Descriptions and Strategies:
Scouts
Scouts are extremely useful units, although you might not realize their importance when they first become available. Possessing the ability to morph into inanimate objects and an extensive range of sight, scouts will serve as the backbone of your intelligence network.
Vulnerabilities
Scouts don't have any weapons and so are defenseless against enemy attacks. However, when morphed, they can only be seen while moving, and since they are commonly behind enemy lines, you won't have enough time to send in backup. Best bet is to try to outrun the enemy because of their good speed.
How to Get the Most out of Scouts
Don't order scouts to "scout" (from the Orders menu), unless you're willing to sacrifice them to see more of the surroundings, since they'll probably wander haphazardly into visual range of the enemy and end up dead. Instead, time permitting, move morphed scouts manually, staying out of the visual range of enemy units or buildings. Using the scout's long visual range, you should be able to avoid detection by stopping your movement as soon as you see an enemy unit approaching - always be ready to hit the s key to stop immediately. Another great tactic is to park a few morphed scouts along the routes that the enemy is likely to take to your base, preventing a surprise attack.
The scout's real strength is its ability to serve as a sight for your artillery units. Move a scout towards the enemy base, stopping to avoid detection, until a building comes into visual range. Then call in the artillery. You can do the same thing to thwart an assault on your base by sending in artillery to crush the enemy stockpile before it can leave. Be careful not to get your scout too close because it will move if some of that artillery fire gets too close to it.
Whenever a scout is attacked, flee and try to get out of your pursuer's visual range. If you think that you have succeeded in doing so, immediately stop by pressing the s key. Wait there until your enemies have moved out of range and it is once again safe to resume your reconnaissance.
