When you ask game designers who they respect, a name that often comes up is Warren Spector, a man who helped created the Ultima Underworld series at Looking Glass Entertainment. By wrapping a rich environment around his games, Spector has successfully given us those moments that epitomize what good gaming should be about. Now working on a new RPG called Deus Ex, Warren Spector, perhaps one of the humblest designers in the industry, deserves acclaim for his forward-thinking vision and impressive reputation.

Warren: If I could capture just one moment in the history of interactive entertainment, it would probably be the release of Star Raiders for the Atari. Prior to that, computer and video games, in my experience, were little more than modest entertainments. They inspired some "oohs" and "aahs," but were appreciated more for their novelty value - nothing like them had ever existed before - rather than because they were particularly compelling in their own right.

Then, one night, I walked into a friend's living room expecting a party. What I saw was 20 or so of my friends sitting in the dark, their faces illuminated only by the flickering light of a television. But they weren't watching I Love Lucy reruns. No, sir. One person, a well-known science-fiction writer, sat cross-legged on the floor, a joystick in his lap. I looked at the screen and, damn, if he wasn't piloting a spaceship! It was Star Raiders, and I couldn't wait for my turn.
