Zerg units and special abilities
Hydralisk: parent form of the Lurker |
Lurker
The new lurker unit will be an aspect of the hydralisks. It's designed to give the Zerg a cloaked attacker that can serve as both siege weapon and ground defense. In fact, Blizzard admits that the Zerg are pretty weak on defense, and the lurker is supposed to be a great defense unit.
The lurker currently requires you to upgrade to a lair and then research the lurker aspect at the hydralisk den (for 200 mineral and 200 gas). After that is done, you can then mutate any hydralisk into a lurker. The lurker transformation will cost 100 mineral and 100 gas and bump up control to 2 for the lurker. The lurker has 125 hit points and no attack above ground, but once burrowed, it can attack. The lurker automatically has the burrow ability, even if you haven't researched burrow yet. Once burrowed, the lurker cannot move. It attacks by thrusting multiple spikes up through the ground in a straight line between it and its maximum range (currently 4 matrices). The attack does 20 concussive damage and only affects ground units. The spikes do splash damage so they can harm the unit it hits and surrounding units. Even a few lurkers can decimate an invading marine horde.
Devourer
The devourer is an aspect of the mutalisk, although the cocoon time will be significantly longer than the guardian aspect. Like the lurker, you will have to research the devourer aspect, although you do so at the greater spire, meaning this unit doesn't become available until you upgrade to a hive. This air unit is designed to be the Zerg's heavy attack vessel, something they are currently lacking. The devourer costs 100 mineral and 200 gas to mutate and takes up 2 control. It's the biggest air unit with 250 hit points and 1 armor. Its attack takes off one-third of the target's current hit points. The attack does a minimum of 5 damage (which could be tweaked), so the devourer can kill a unit if it reduces its hit points to a low enough number. The devourer's attack will not be affected by armor. The devourer cannot attack ground units or grounded buildings, although flying Terran buildings can be attacked. The movement speed of the devourer is somewhere between the guardian and the mutalisk.
Ultralisk
The ultralisk is being improved via two upgrades. The first upgrade is called improved carapace and adds 3 to the ultralisk's armor. The second upgrade is muscle stimulants and increases the ultralisk's movement speed.
