Quake
Publisher: id Software
Developer: id Software
Without a doubt, Quake was the most talked about game of the year - along with its creators at id Software, the game graced the cover of almost every computer related magazine, and finding fault with it became one of the most popular pastimes on Usenet. But when all the hype died down, and all the naysayers had moved on to other targets, Quake firmly held its grasp on our hard drives. Many dismiss Quake as nothing more than "Doom III," but it is clearly much more, and its unabated popularity attests to that fact. Its technical achievements can be discussed 'til the Death Knights come home, but the real reason Quake stands above its peers is pure and simple: It's fun. No one comes close to designing games as frightening and brilliant as the folks at id, and no game gets our blood a-pumping as fast as Quake.

     Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition
Publisher: 3D Realms
Developer: 3D Realms
"Doom on steroids." That's how a lot of people describe 3D Realms' powerhouse, testosterone-steeped, first-person shooter that made a megaton splash in the gaming pool this past year. It was a close race, but in the end, Duke ended up nipping at Quake's heels.
